Madeleine viene apparentemente fatta morire e poi trasformata in una creatura fredda ed inerte, del tutto priva di quella vitalità che aveva fatto innamorare Beaumont. Questi prova quindi a ribellarsi a Legendre, ma senza fortuna: spetterà a Neil sconfiggere il malefico negromante e i suoi mostruosi aiutanti. (Fonte: wikipedia)<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::<br /> <br /> RECENSIONE (Italiano)<br /> <br /> Un nutrito gruppo di contadini sta riempiendo una fossa di terra, al centro esatto di una piccola strada di campagna. Un lamentoso canto voodoo accompagna il macabro rituale. Una carrozza si avvicina ed è costretta a fermarsi, a bordo due inglesi appena arrivati nelle \"loro\" Indie Occidentali. Il cocchiere, un enorme uomo di colore in livrea, spiega alla coppietta: \"E\' un funerale. La gente qui ha paura dei ladri di cadaveri, quindi li seppellisce in mezzo alla strada, dove c\'è sempre un andirivieni di persone\". E prosegue la marcia, mentre un esoterico sguardo segue la carrozza da una dimensione trascendente.<br /> Comincia così il primo film sui morti viventi della storia del cinema. Un vero e proprio gioiello firmato dai fratelli Halperin, ambientato ad Haiti e con uno strepitoso Bela Lugosi, in realtà già sull\'orlo della totale pazzia. La trama ha un ottimo intreccio (naturalmente và tutto considerato nell\'ottica degli anni \'30, in cui semplicemente non si potevano riciclare idee vecchie...eh, i bei tempi andati). Una coppia di fidanzati (Madeline e Neil) accetta l\'invito di un giovane e ricco proprietario terriero (Charles Beaumont) di celebrare le nozze nella sua tenuta. Poco prima della cerimonia i due conoscono il macabro e inquietante Murder Legendre, che li incrocia in mezzo alla strada, e un grandioso e ironico padre Bruner, che officerà il matrimonio.<br /> <br /> Il giovane rampollo Beaumont è segretamente innamorato dell\'eterea Madeline e chiede un disperato aiuto al temuto Legendre: una bellissima sequenza all\'interno del mulino dello stregone chiarisce il ruolo dei morti viventi nella visione di Halperin, ovvero zombie riportati in non-vita dalle tradizioni voodoo, per essere utilizzati come schiavi nelle piantagioni o nelle nuove fabbriche del capitalismo in sviluppo. Una sottile, ma esplicita critica alla società dell\'epoca, al modello fordiano di catena di montaggio, luogo in cui gli operai si annullano nella ripetitività e si trasformano in macchine biologiche prive di volontà. In questo senso un parallelo con Tempi Moderni di Chaplin non è affatto peregrino, pur con le dovute proporzioni.<br /> Tornando alla trama, Legendre può suggerire a Beaumont l\'unica soluzione di cui è capace: uccidere Madeline, farla tornare in vita come zombie e godersela per il resto della sua esistenza. Baumont, terrorizzato da un\'idea così blasfema, rifiuta, ma quando viene il momento del fatidico \"sì\" si fa vincere dall\'amore e mette in atto il folle piano. La tragedia così si svolgerà per un\'ora, con un Beaumont pentito, un Legendre sempre più malvagio e dalla mente involuta, un Neil disperato ma deciso almeno a vendicarsi con l\'aiuto del Dottor Bruner. Fino ad un epilogo di morte e purificazione in cima ad una rupe scoscesa, riversa su un mare spumeggiante e indifferente.<br /> <br /> Come accennato la trama è brillante, assimilabile alla tradizione delle tragedie shakespeariane, anche se i vari eventi sono facilmente intuibili, anche perché il regista sceglie di evitare preamboli troppo lunghi e getta subito lo spettatore nel pieno della vicenda, lasciando ad un brevissimo flash-back a parole la spiegazione del perché la coppia si trovi ad Haiti.<br /> Gli attori sono credibili anche se tremendamente legnosi (ma complici sono le tecniche di ripresa dell\'epoca) e il montaggio non li aiuta (ma ai più \"giovani\" ricordo che all\'epoca \"montaggio\" significava forbici e colla, fotogramma per fotogramma), eppure l\'abilità del regista fa sì che siano le loro espressioni visive a veicolare le emozioni e non tanto la gestualità. Gli occhi sono senz\'altro la parte del corpo più inquadrata e i magici giochi di ombre del bianco e nero danno alle scene un\'irresistibile atmosfera gotica, sottolineandone il macabro e il brivido.<br /> Gli interpreti migliori sono sicuramente il malvagio Bela Lugosi ed il prete Joseph Cawthorn, come pure l\'innamorato Robert Frazer, mentre la coppia Bellamy-Harron troppo spesso si fa sorprendere in primi piani totalmente inespressivi (anche quando sono entrambi vivi).<br /> Gli zombie sono perfettamente in sintonia con l\'accezione che dà loro il regista: uomini normali, in forma, ma con lo sguardo vitreo e fisso, privo di alcuna volontà. Più che camminare, caracollano e ubbidiscono ciecamente agli ordini telepatici del loro maestro. La loro \"maschera\" è composta semplicemente da un trucco più pesante e da ombre nette e nerissime. Ma sono perfettamente riconoscibili, anche se non mettono paura. Tutt\'altro. Incutono pietà nell\'osservatore, che li vede per quello che sono: schiavi inconsapevoli, loro malgrado. E\' lo sguardo di Lugosi che fa rabbrividire. Sono le ombre del castello che si fondono con quelle degli zombie semoventi, i loro sguardi vuoti, che fanno paura. Niente a che vedere con l\'idea oggi in voga di questo antico sentimento, certamente. Eppure anche il difficile gusto moderno si fa penetrare dall\'inquietudine davanti ad un gruppo di morti viventi, chiamati uno ad uno con le loro gesta da vivi dallo stregone, che dissotterra il corpo angelico di una Madeline condannata, sotto gli occhi di uno sconvolto Beaumont.<br /> <br /> Tornando ai giorni nostri, questo è un film che pone le basi della produzione di genere successiva. Due esempi su tutti: l\'idea che gli zombie siano frutto dei riti magici voodoo e la critica sociale che fà dei morti viventi delle vittime della società (e il pensiero va immediatamente a Romero). Per quest\'ultimo aspetto, però, c\'è da fare una distinzione importante. In Romero gli zombi incarnano le vittime di una società imputridita dall\'opulenza e dal benessere portato all\'eccesso, di un mondo che non ha più valori o punti di riferimento chiari, che non sia \"il dimenarsi in funzione del consumo\". Halperin, invece, parla di promesse tradite: di una società capitalistica che di fronte all\'esplosione della produttività nelle fabbriche e lo sviluppo altrettanto imponente della scienza positiva aveva fatto intravedere un futuro di illimitato miglioramento, concedendo poi in realtà miseria, sfruttamento e una disastrosa prima guerra mondiale. Romero ha di fronte una società marcescente come la pelle dei suoi morti viventi, Halperin una società in via di maturazione, che avanza barcollando sotto il peso di tutte le sue contraddizioni.<br /> Un film da vedere, per notare come anche l\'horror possa riflettere il senso profondo di una fase storica (altro che genere di serie B), e apprezzare la magia sicuramente ingenua, ma forse per questo genuina, della cinematografia anni \'30. For help Beaumont turns to the devious Legendre, a man who runs his mill by mind controlling people he has turned into zombies. After Beaumont uses Legendre\'s zombie potion on Madeleine, he is dissatisfied with her emotionless being and wants her to be changed back. Legendre has no intention of doing this and he drugs Beaumont as well to add to his zombie collection.
