In 1965, 400 American troops faced an ambush by 2,000 enemy troops in the Ia Drang Valley (also known as the Valley of Death), in one of the most gruesome fights of the Vietnam War. WE WERE SOLDIERS is a detailed recreation of this true story: of the strategies, obstacles, and human cost faced by the troops that participated. The story focuses on the lieutenant colonel that led the attack, Hal Moore (Mel Gibson), and a civilian reporter who accompanied them, Joseph Galloway (Barry Pepper), as well as a number of other soldiers who were involved. This is an unusual Vietnam film in that it also shows the North Vietnamese perspective on the battle; their leader Lieutenant General Nguyen Huu An (Don Duong) is depicted as a brave soldier and smart commander. And in addition to the many gory battlefield sequences--which seem to have been influenced by SAVING PRIVATE RYAN--we also see how the carnage of war affects those left behind, the soldiers' wives and children. Basato sulle vicende della guerra in Vietnam, quando il Tenente Colonello Hal Moore e 400 soldati americani vennero circondati da oltre 2000 nordvietnamiti nella valle di Ia Drang, soprannominata in seguito \"valle della morte\".
Dio, patria e famiglia. Bisogna tornare ai tempi di John Wayne per rintracciare un manifesto tanto aderente a quella didascalia. Un soldato parte dopo aver salutato il figlio nella culla, nato il giorno prima. Il colonnello fa pregare i suoi cinque bambini a tavola. Prima della grande partenza saluta la moglie che dorme ed esce con passo spedito. Lei si sveglia, corre fuori in camicia da notte ma lui è già lontano. Non si capisce come il regista che ha firmato Braveheart abbia collezionato tanti luoghi comuni. È indubbio che molti dei 138 minuti del film sono \"sbagliati\", faticano di retorica e di già visto. Strano, perché l\'investimento è stato cospicuo. E strano che Gibson, che non sbaglia un colpo, abbia legittimato tutto questo. Siamo nel 1965, la storia è quella del colonnello Moore, paracadutista, eroe della Corea, al quale viene affidato il compito di aprire le ostilità col Vietnam. Gran parte del film riguarda la cruenta battaglia intorno a una collina, con rovesciamenti di fronte e tutta la violenza, il napalm e gli elicotteri che abbiamo visto nei vari film sul Vietnam, con in più la nuova tendenza-iperrealista-violenta alla Soldato Ryan, alla quale ormai nessun film di guerra può più sfuggire. Le perdite sono terribili ma il colonnello fa il suo dovere di eroe. Notata una Stowe, che fa la moglie eroina-a-suo-modo di Gibson, stereotipata e davvero troppo segnata dalla chirurgia. In virtù del lungo spettacolo di guerra, certo ben fatto, non ci sentiamo di penalizzare troppo. Mezza stella in più di quelle ufficiali.

We Were Soldiers A French Army unit is on patrol in Vietnam in 1954 during the First Indochina War. The captain of the patrol curses the land when they see nothing. Then, the unit is suddenly ambushed by Vietminh forces who kill the officers and, although the unit kills many Vietminh, it is eventually overrun. Nguyen Huu An, hypothesising that if they take no prisoners the French will eventually stop sending troops, orders the execution of all surviving French soldiers. Eleven years later, Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore (Mel Gibson), a dedicated U.S. soldier, is deeply committed to training his troops, who are preparing to be sent to Vietnam. The night before their departure, the unit's officers hold a party to celebrate. Moore learns from a superior officer that his unit will be known as the 1st Battalion / 7th cavalry regiment. He is disquieted because the 7th Cavalry regiment was the unit commanded by General George Custer in the 19th Century when he and his men were slaughtered at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Moore is also dismayed because President Lyndon B. Johnson has decreed that the war would be fought "on the cheap," without declaring it a national emergency. As a result, Moore believes he will be deprived of his oldest, best-trained soldiers (a formal declaration of war would have meant mobilization and extension of the terms of enlistment for volunteer soldiers) - about 25% of his battalion - just prior to shipping out for Vietnam. Before leaving for Vietnam, Moore delivers a touching speech to his unit: "Look around you, in the 7th Cavalry,we got a Captain from the Ukraine, another from Puerto Rico, we got Japanese, Chinese, Blacks, Hispanics, Cherokee Indian, Jews and Gentiles, all American. Now here in the States some men in this unit may experience discrimination because of race or creed, but for you and me now, all that is gone. We're moving into the valley of the shadow of death, where you will watch the back of the man next to you, as he will watch yours, and you won't care what color he is or by what name he calls God. Let us understand the situation we're goin into battle against a tough and determined enemy. I can't promise you that I will bring you all home alive, but this I swear: When we go into battle, I will be the first one to set foot on the field, and I will be the last to step off. And I will leave no one behind. Dead, or alive, we all come home together. So help me God." After arriving in Vietnam, he learns that an American base has been attacked, and is ordered to take his 395 men after the enemy and eliminate them, despite the fact that intelligence has no idea of the number of enemy troops.
