Storia della Canzone

WE ARE THE WORLD

Il 28 gennaio 1985 le più importanti star della musica americana sono riunite a Los Angeles per partecipare alla cerimonia di consegna degli American Music Awards, una sorta di Oscar della musica analogo al più famoso Grammy. Nella stessa serata, negli A&M Studios della stessa città, quegli stessi personaggi darYears vita alla storica registrazione di uno dei singoli più venduti della storia della musica pop.
Nata per scopi benefici, USA FOR AFRICA è il nome della band messa su per l’occasione e come poteva intitolarsi la canzone, se non \"Noi siamo il mondo\", con la megalomania che contraddistingue gli americani? Cerchiamo di capire passo per passo come è nata We Are The World.
Pochi mesi prima, Bob Geldof aveva messo insieme nel progetto Band Aid numerosi artisti inglesi quali Phil Collins, David Bowie, Paul Mc Cartney, Sting, i quali, incidendo Do They Know It\'s Christmas? avevano raccolto circa 8 milioni di dollari a favore delle popolazioni africane colpite da guerre e carestie.

Harry Belafonte aveva fatto alcuni concerti di beneficenza per le popolazioni africane e pensò di sfruttare a fondo l\'idea con un 45 giri non-profit mettendo insieme un certo numero di artisti di colore. Si era rivolto per primo a Ken Kragen, manager di Lionel Richie, che si dichiarò entusiasta del progetto, e successivamente a Stevie Wonder. Richie a sua volta contattò Quincy Jones e Michael Jackson. Da qui in poi aderirono numerosi altri artisti anche bianchi, e data l\'enorme difficoltà di far coincidere i numerosi impegni di lavoro, si pensò appunto di sfruttare la data dei Music Awards per poter riunire tutti senza ricorrere all\'antipatico sistema delle multi-sessioni, molto più comodo dal punto di vista tecnico, ma meno soddisfacente dal punto di vista artistico e umano.

A Lionel Richie si deve l\'idea musicale del brano: il ritornello We are the World, We are the Children è opera sua, mentre la parte introduttiva e il bridge sono stati poi aggiunti da Michael Jackson. Nel giro di soli quattro incontri, il brano viene completato. In extremis sarà apportata una piccola modifica al testo, laddove There\'s a chance we\'re taking, we\'re taking our own lives potrebbe dare l\'idea del suicidio e verrà sostituita con There\'s a choice we\'re making, we\'re saving our own lives. L\'orchestrazione è in gran parte elettronica, in puro stile anni ottanta, basata su suoni sintetizzati e tastiere programmate dal mago Humberto Gatica. Per realizzarla, il 22 gennaio vengono chiamati alcuni sessionmen di spicco agli studi Lion Share di Kenny Rogers: tra loro Steve Porcaro dei Toto e altri nomi meno noti al pubblico.

Quincy Jones, oltre che produrre e arrangiare il disco, si fa carico del difficile lavoro di smussare gli egocentrismi e le rivalità delle star. 50 cassette-guida su cui studiare la parte di canto vengono inviate ad altrettanti artisti, con l’assoluta raccomandazione di non far trapelare nulla a chicchessia e di riportare la cassetta il 28 gennaio sera. Con tatto Quincy Jones cerca di far capire a ciascuno il ruolo che deve avere nell\'incisione (molti non avrYears una parte solista, ma solo una voce nel coro). La sera della registrazione prega tutti di lasciare fuori dalla porta le smanie di protagonismo (sembra che Madonna e Prince non abbiano partecipato al progetto proprio per difficoltà del genere) e arriva perfino ad attaccare di persona sul pavimento della sala d\'incisione dei pezzi di nastro adesivo con i nomi degli artisti (si vedono anche sulla Cover of disco) per assegnare i posti cercando di non urtare le suscettibilità di nessuno.

L’appuntamento è fissato per le dieci di sera ma Jacko arriva un\'ora prima per registrare una particolare versione del coro con la sua voce che sarà quella definitiva. Perchè alle dieci di sera (ore sette del mattino in Italia)? Perchè due ore prima finisce la diretta televisiva degli America Music Award e bisogna dare tempo a qualcuno dei sicuri premiati di raggiungere il luogo dell\'appuntamento.
Uno ad uno arrivano. La lista dei nomi è veramente impressionante: Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Cyndi Lauper (premiata due ore prima insieme a Lionel Richie), Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick. Questo tanto per fare dei nomi. Bruce Springsteen vola a Los Angeles direttamente da Syracuse al termine di un concerto di quattro ore: la voce del Boss sarà rauca e affaticata, ma particolarmente emozionante. Arriva anche Bob Geldolf dall\'Inghilterra e viene accolto da un applauso, unico straniero in un gruppo tutto stelle e strisce.
La registrazione viene seguita da 500 invitati speciali tra cui Jane Fonda, Ali McGraw, Steve Martin tramite un circuito chiuso televisivo.
C’è qualche problema nella registrazione delle parti armoniche. Stevie Wonder propone di sostituire una strofa in swahili ma Geldof gli ricorda che gli etiopi non parlano swahili. Alle tre e dieci del mattino si concordano gli interventi in duetto che sono: la Turner con Billy Joel, Wonder con Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers e Paul Simon, Willie Nelson con la Warwick e Huey Lewis con Cyndi Lauper che chiede a Quincy Jones se può improvvisare una frase quando è il suo turno e difatti il suo intervento vocale è particolarmente vibrante ed intenso. Alle cinque si registrano le parti soliste e tocca a Bob Dylan e Ray Charles, che improvvisano nel lungo finale in stile gospel.

Le stars di cui si individua la voce, nell\'ordine, sono: Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Daryl Hall, di nuovo Michael Jackson, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Kim Carnes, Bob Dylan e Ray Charles.

Alla fine tutti gli artisti, tra saluti e abbracci, si congratulano per il lavoro svolto, si fYears i complimenti e si scambiano perfino gli autografi! Alle sei del mattino rimangono solo i tecnici per le necessarie procedure di post-produzione.
Ken Kragen telefona a Lionel Richie alle sette e mezza: appena sentito il nastro finito, non ha potuto fare a meno di piangere dall’emozione (forse anche al pensiero di quanti soldi avrebbe fatto questo disco). La realizzazione del brano non ha portato via più di otto ore in totale. Solo una nottata per sette minuti di musica in cui il Gotha del pop americano ha lavorato con umiltà e professionismo.
Una sola volta è stato necessario fermare il lavoro, per uno strano disturbo proveniente da uno dei microfoni: era il rumore del tintinnio dei braccialetti di Cyndi Lauper che, una volta chiarito il problema, volentieri se ne separa per un po\'.

Il 45 giri viene stampato in una prima tiratura di 800 mila copie, che vYears esaurite in un week-end. In USA vende complessivamente 8 milioni di copie, e altri 8 milioni nel resto del mondo, diventando uno dei 10 singoli più venduti in tutta la storia della musica, vince due Grammy e raccoglie alla fine ben 60 milioni di dollari, che vengono inviati alle popolazioni di Etiopia, Sudan, Angola, Burkina-Faso, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambico, Niger, Somalia e Uganda impoverite da fame, guerre civili e carestie di ogni genere.

In USA, oltre a raggiungere il primo posto nella classifica di Billboard dedicata al pop e al rock, il pezzo raggiunge la vetta anche nelle graduatorie disco della suddetta rivista. Un successo forse prevedibile ma comunque piacevole se preso soprattutto come gratificazione per chi a questo progetto si è accostato con vero spirito umanitario e ci ha creduto fin dall’inizio. Nota infelice nell’exploit internazionale del brano è che alcuni grossi distributori inglesi si sono rifiutati di mandare a loro spese il disco nei negozi perchè hYears già perduto abbastanza denaro con il progetto inglese dalla Band Aid. In fondo dal loro punto di vista hYears ragione. I cantanti per incidere un disco gratis non ci perdono nulla anzi, ci guadagnano in immagine. Loro, i distributori, invece sì.

Di We Are The World si potrebbero criticare le parole buoniste, melense, scontate del testo. E difatti sarebbe il caso di farlo. Versi che sembrano usciti dalla penna, intinta nel miele, di Walter l’amerikano Veltroni. Una banalità dopo l’altra, buonismo d’accatto, con tutti quei riferimenti ipocriti all’uguaglianza tra la gente, del costruire un futuro migliore bla bla bla. La differenza sta in questo: se a Michael Jackson viene la dissenteria, con una semplice pillola o con dei fermenti lattici tutto torna a posto e lui se ne torna a letto, involtandosi tra coltri bianche di seta, contornato da amichetti che gli fYears aria con i ventagli. Un suo simile in Mali, tanto per fare un esempio, con la dissenteria ci muore e basta.
