Tre stelle vanagloriose e capricciose dello star system hollywoodiano sono costrette a convivere dentro lo stesso film: un war movie ad alto budget ambientato nel sud-est asiatico. Tugg Speedman è una tronfia superstar di action movie che sogna gloria e Oscar, Kirk Lazarus è un attore drammatico e pluripremiato col vizio del metodo e dell\'immedesimazione estrema, Jeff Portnoy è il divo grasso e cocainomane della saga comica \"The Fatties\". Decisi a correggere i loro vizi e a non tollerare oltre bizze e stravaganze, il regista del kolossal bellico e il sedicente scrittore del best seller che lo ha ispirato li precipitano dentro una guerra reale e una jungla autenticamente selvaggia. Occupati a bisticciare e a rinfacciarsi le rispettive carriere, procederanno ignari del pericolo imminente. Venire alle armi con un vero e sbraitante gruppo di guerriglieri asiatici gli sveglierà finalmente dal sogno della finzione. Tra esplosioni a colori, effetti speciali, e proiettili a salve troveranno lo spirito di gruppo e un finale conforme al genere. Il \"soldato Charlot\" di Charlie Chaplin e il macchinista di Buster Keaton furono i primi a mettere alla berlina la vita militare e a parodiare l\'insensatezza della guerra. La guerra, l\'esercito e la caserma sono luoghi privilegiati della risata, vuoi per il desiderio di esorcizzare la drammaticità degli eventi che vi si svolgono, vuoi per portare un caos travolgente dentro un\'istituzione organizzata. L\'applicazione del comico a un oggetto drammatico come la guerra è perciò una delle tante e possibili declinazioni del concetto di war movie. Diversamente, la comicità di Tropic Thunder non affonda i denti nella follia di uno scenario di guerra. Si tratta piuttosto di una \"dichiarazione di guerra\" al cinema bellico, di una commedia parodistica dei conflitti statunitensi rappresentati da Hollywood: Normandia, Corea, Vietnam, Golfo.
