Progressivamente la coppia si troverà assediata da tre sconosciuti mascherati che hanno un solo obiettivo: terrorizzarli e poi ucciderli.<br /> Bryan Bertino, regista poco più che trentenne alla sua opera prima, prendendo spunto da un fatto di sangue realmente accaduto porta sullo schermo un trattato su come si costruisce la tensione. Nel non breve prologo si tratta di una tensione tra innamorati che scoprono di avere aspettative diverse (quei petali di rose di color rosso sangue sparsi ovunque non fanno presa su Kristen ma sono astutamente anticipatori). Poi, dopo il battere alla porta (i rumori sono utilizzati in un crescendo che ha ben poco di realistico ma offre con sicurezza una vasta gamma di soprassalti) la situazione precipita.
