Gli abitanti di Haven, una cittadina battista della Lousiana, vogliono uccidere Lauren (Robb), una dodicenne che credono abbia assassinato il fratello. I «cristiani integralisti» incolpano la bambina, soprattutto, delle sciagure che si stanno abbattendo sulla città: identici alle bibliche piaghe d’Egitto, i funesti eventi sarebbero una punizione divina per la malvagità della bimba e per lo stile di vita non allineato di sua madre. Per salvare la piccola, Doug (Morrissey), un benpensante del luogo, ingaggia Katherine (Swank) e il suo assistente Ben (Elba), ricercatori universitari specializzati nello smontare fenomeni apparentemente miracolosi. In questo caso, i due dovrebbero trovare la spiegazione scientifica dietro le supposte piaghe: acque del fiume rosse come sangue, pioggia di rane…
Con ferrea logica razionale, Katherine intraprende la sua opera di demistificazione. Ma tracce di satanismo e la sempre più evidente mano di Belzebù metteranno a dura prova lo scetticismo della donna, mentre il suo tragico passato di missionaria in Sudan riaffiorerà prepotente, spingendola a ritrovare sé stessa.

Niente miracoli, è solo scienza. Così Katherine Winter, dopo aver perduto una figlia e rinunciato all\'abito religioso e alla sua opera da missionaria, è decisa - stavolta vestendo i panni di un docente universitario - a smascherare presunti miracoli in nome di una più fondata dottrina scientifica. Tutto volge al meglio fino a quando Doug, un giovane insegnante di una piccola cittadina, la invita a indagare su una serie di strani fenomeni che la gente del luogo crede essere il frutto vendicativo di Dio. I segni del male è un film straniante e claustrofobico, aperto alle interpretazioni più disparate. Come molte pellicole simili, non può sfuggire a un giudizio meramente legato al genere, uscito dal quale la quasi totalità delle scene diventerebbe insopportabile e priva di senso.
Ma il pregio di questo lavoro, per lo spettatore che voglia lasciarsi alle spalle una critica severa, è quello di trascinare in un incubo infernale in cui – come spesso accade nel labile confine che separa gli horror movie da tutto il resto – è quasi impossibile individuare la linea di demarcazione fra il bene il male. La morfologia fiabesca c\'è tutta, e si muove dall\'eroe all\'aiutante, fra i topoi che il genere impone alla secolare lotta fra le forze ultraterrene. Dieci piaghe, lanciate di getto su una popolazione bigotta e provinciale, un fiume insanguinato e l\'ira implacabile di una bambina di dodici anni che nasconde un mistero terrificante. I segni del male è un film per uno stomaco forte o per un cinefilo masochista che, lasciando perdere per una volta i presagi apocalittici che poco si attagliano a certi eccessi visivi, gusti (si fa per dire) tutto l\'orrore della macchina da presa
