ai 35 milioni di dollari.
La vicenda ruota attorno alla scelta di una bambina compiuta di fronte alla dea Ma\'anshan: diventerà bellissima e non sarà mai schiava ma in cambio di

questo dono non conoscerà mai il vero amore: coloro che lei amerà saranno destinati ad una morte prematura. Sullo sfondo si muovono un generale vittorioso

ma senza onore, un assassino dal passato oscuro ed uno schiavo forse appartenente alle terre delle nevi, dove la gente è cristallina, fiduciosa nel prossimo

e corre quasi alla velocità della luce. Questi personaggi si rincorrono in un universo fantastico in cui una donna togliendosi un mantello può indurre un

esercito a disarmarsi, gli dei vivono accanto agli uomini ed un bambino può diventare un signore del male perché da piccolo ha preso una botta in testa.

Come se non bastasse la sceneggiatura si abbandona a considerazioni piuttosto banali sulla natura del destino e del libero arbitrio, con la soluzione a

questa complessa questione snocciolata dal regista in conferenza stampa: \"l\'amore può cambiare il destino\".

Immaginiamo quindi di poter riunire in un solo film una dozzina di romanzi d\'amore, cappa e spada cinesi e di riunirli in un solo film. Va da se che non si

tratta di letteratura di grande livello. E la versione cinematografica non va molto meglio. Nonostante gli attori siano di alto livello, essi sembrano

muoversi goffamente nei panni di personaggi le cui motivazioni sono quanto meno stilizzate. Per essere generosi. Anche i meccanismi narrativi risultano

piuttosto datati. Far ruotare l\'azione di una pellicola intorno all\'equivoco dello scambio di persona non si può dire sia particolarmente originale, ma anzi

al limite del ridicolo. Anche le scene di battaglia, anche se qualitativamente migliori rispetto al Seven Swords di Hark, sono spesso confuse ed il regista

sembra in affanno a seguirne le coreografie. I costumi poi sono ridondanti, accesi nei colori, rispecchiando forse l\'intenzione di creare uno stile epico e

sontuoso. Sfortunatamente i personaggi avvolti in questi panni al confine del kitsch riescono al massimo a ricordare certi ninnoli che vengono dati in dono

ai clienti di certi ristoranti cinesi. Molto lontani, cioè, da uno stile alto. Gli effetti speciali sono molto inferiori rispetto agli standard di oggi. Si

potrà certo dire che non sono la cosa più importante, ma in determinati momenti è davvero difficile convincerne l\'occhio. Il finale, che dovrebbe tirare le

fila del significato profondo del film appare invece raffazzonato e posticcio, come un intuizione dell\'ultimo momento. Se il destino dei colossal cinesi

deve essere tracciato da una The Promise, c\'è davvero poco in cui sperare.
