- Trama -

Il film \"The Day After\", prodotto per la televisione ed adattato per il grande schermo, vuole illustrare con intenti ammonitori le conseguenze di una guerra nucleare. Nella prima parte dello spettacolo viene presentata la vita di tutti i giorni di una tranquilla cittadina del Kansas, Lawrence, attraverso i personaggi della middle-class. Vediamo il chirurgo infaticabile, padre e marito affettuoso, la casalinga intenta alle faccende quotidiane, la ragazza che litiga con la sorella per il possesso di una scatola di pillole anticoncezionali, il contadino mentre sorveglia il bestiame, il militare di colore alle prese con problemi familiari, i soldati impegnati in ricognizioni di semplice controllo. Intanto la televisione, partendo da semplici avvisi, trasmette, in un crescendo angoscioso, notizie sempre più allarmanti; l\'equilibrio tra le grandi potenze sembra essere arrivato ad un punto di rottura, la crisi mondiale appare irreversibile, l\'Urss, attacca l\'Occidente invadendo la Germania. Le notizie sono sempre più incalzanti, il governo di Washington dirama alla popolazione disposizioni di sicurezza, il tono dello speaker assume inflessioni concitate. Inizia la fuga disordinata della folla, il panico colpisce l\'uomo della strada, le domande si affollano senza possibilità di ottenere risposta. Scatta l\'ora X; dall\'Urss e dall\'America vengono dati gli ordini di morte e dalle rampe sotterranee partono i missili a testata nucleare. Nella pace di un giorno d\'estate le sagome slanciate delle bombe atomiche si stagliano in un cielo azzurro e fermo, ultima visione d\'incontaminata bellezza. Poi, il terrificante boato ed i funghi atomici riempiono lo schermo. Gli esseri umani restano da prima paralizzati, come fermati per sempre in quell\'attimo, poi spariscono di colpo dissolti in cenere e tutto dintorno è distruzione e rovina. La seconda parte del film, il vero \"giorno dopo\", mostra quello che accadrà a Lawrence ed al mondo nell\'ipotesi di una guerra atomica: il ritorno di un Medioevo nucleare, con saccheggi, processioni di morti-viventi, appestati, assassini. Il dottore, sopravvissuto alla strage, organizza un centro di assistenza nel suo ospedale e si prodiga per portare qualche aiuto a creature morenti o orrendamente deturpate. Tra tanti orrori viene al mondo un bambino, simbolo di una speranza che, nonostante tutto, rinasce nel cuore dell\'uomo. Il film si chiude sull\'immagine di due uomini che si abbracciano sulle rovine di una città rasa al suolo.
