Le cose iniziano a cambiare quando arriva la nuova vicina, Penny (Cuoco), bellissima e un po' sventata. Sheldon, il coinquilino di Leonard, non ha nulla in contrario a trascorrere le serate giocando al Paroliere Klingon con gli altri amici affetti da difficolt?? di socializzazione, nonch?? colleghi scienziati del Caltech, Wolowitz (Helberg) e Koothrappali (Nayyar). Leonard, invece, intravede in Penny un universo di possibilit?? del tutto nuove... compresa quella dell'amore. La sitcom si svolge a Pasadena, ma difficilmente vediamo i personaggi fuori dal loro appartamento o da quello di Penny. L'ascensore ?? sempre rotto, cos?? vediamo Sheldon e Leonard farsi ogni volta tre piani di scale a piedi. La lavagna che compare nel loro soggiorno presenta in ogni episodio una equazione diversa. The Big Bang Theory ?? stato criticato per l'uso di finte risate registrate, sebbene venga in realt?? registrato con del pubblico in sala.
