Sono finiti i tempi felici, o pseudo tali, di Tim Burton. Il nero si è riappropriato di un posto nel suo arcobaleno. Niente più cadaveri innamorati, pesci troppo grossi o biglietti golosi. E’ tempo di tinte forti e personaggi che la lotta con la società (da sempre elemento portante delle sue storie) non la fanno emarginandosi, ma con la vendetta. E’ il momento di Sweeney Todd, il barbiere serial killer a colpi di rasoio, che vuol punire quegli stessi londinesi che quindici anni prima tollerarono senza muovere un dito il suo ingiustificato arresto da parte di un giudice corrotto. Se il musical di Broadway da cui è tratto questo film (premesso comunque che la storia di Sweeney Todd apparve per la prima volta nel 1846 grazie ad una piccola pubblicazione narrativa di Thomas Peckett) faceva degli omicidi del protagonista la metafora di una rivolta delle classi sociali più deboli contro gli abusi dei ricchi, Tim Burton punta forte sull’ossessione del singolo per una giustizia che non è divina, ma individuale e quindi sommaria. Se il giudice la utilizza per il proprio tornaconto, Sweeney fa altrettanto piegandola alla propria rabbia ergendosi quasi a Dio tanto da far sembrare quasi che in lui risieda anche quella sete di rivincita che un tempo relegò Edward mani di forbice ai margini della città. Stessi viso (Johnny Depp) capelli arruffati e ciuffo bianco, ma le lame alla fine delle braccia stavolta fanno male davvero.
“Un film muto con le musiche”, così lo ha definito Burton. Quelli del suo ultimo film sono infatti personaggi che non parlerebbero, che vivono in sé stessi senza ascoltare (emblematici i vari duetti in cui spesso le voci sono all’unisono, ma il senso delle parole completamente diverso. Su tutti il Depp-Bonham Carter di “My friends”). Ecco quindi che la cornice da musical nella quale si muovono sembra un pò un contrappasso per la loro cupezza. Ok, non ci sono coreografie e gente che balla per strada come invece è solito per il genere, toni e testi delle canzoni sono drammatici, ma la contrapposizione fra il sangue sgorgante dalle gole tagliate e il parlare dei propri assassini intonando un acuto, fa parte di quello humour nero da sempre caratteristica di Burton.
Qui è al suo film più cupo, dentro vi risiedono tutte le tematiche concettuali e visive dei suoi precedenti lavori (il freak, la società corrotta, i figli, la morte, la satira sociale) compresa quella musica che già in \"Nightmare before Christmas\" e \"La sposa cadavere\" era protagonista. Quel che ne esce è pellicola affascinante nella sua estrema drammaticità e capacità di spingersi ai limiti, un racconto incatalogabile che sembra uscito da un incubo di Allan Poe, da godere più di testa che di pancia/cuore. Bellissime le scenografie del nostro Dante Ferretti, perfetto tutto il cast (inutile dire della bravura di Depp, è scontata) compresa quella Bonham Carter criticata non si sa perché negli States: a parte le capacità canore su cui è difficile esprimersi, nessuna meglio di lei poteva rappresentare Mrs Lovett.

La Sra. Lovett le cuenta a Todd que su mujer se suicid├│ con veneno despu├⌐s de que el juez Turpin se aprovechara de ella. Pero cuando un barbero rival, el flamante italiano Pirelli , amenaza con descubrir la verdadera identidad de Sweeney, Todd le mata cort├�ndole la garganta. Al no saber qu├⌐ hacer con el cuerpo, la Sra. Lovett ve esta circunstancia como una potencial soluci├│n para su debilitado negocio - y sugiere usar la carne humana para el relleno de sus empanadas de carne. Sweeney descubre que el juez ha volcado todo su cari├▒o hacia Johanna, la ya adolescente hija de Sweeney, la cual est├� ahora bajo la tutela de Turpin. Prisionera en su casa, un d├�a Anthony, el joven marinero que rescat├│ a Sweeney del mar, se fija en Johanna. Perdidamente enamorado, Anthony jura rescatar a Johanna y casarse con ella. Mientras tanto, las empanadas de carne de la Sra. Lovett pronto se convierten en la comidilla de Londres, y mientras su negocio florece, sue├▒a con una vida respetable junto al lado del mar junto a Sweeney como su marido y con el ex ayudante de Pirelli, Toby ahora a su cargo, y tambi├⌐n con su hijo adoptado.
