Il periodo tra il 1920 e il’30 è stato uno dei più prolifici per il blues, in questi anni si sono affermati decine e decine di straordinari musicisti che, ognuno con le proprie peculiarità, hanno contribuito a formare in modo definitivo le basi dei vari stili blues. Tra questa moltitudine di “pionieri musicali” spicca la figura di Mississippi John Hurt. Egli era un musicista e compositore unico, il suo modo di costruire e suonare i brani non ha nessun riscontro in musicisti a lui contemporanei o precedenti. Hurt si differenziava in tutto e per tutto dalla classica figura del bluesman dell’epoca: Egli conduceva infatti una vita tranquilla con la moglie e i 14 figli nella cittadina di Avalon nella parte nord dello stato del Mississippi (al confine con l’Arkansas) dove era nato nel 1893. La collocazione geografica del suddetto paesino è distante da quella del Delta e proprio questo fatto fece si che John non subì l’influenza dei bluesmen dell’epoca, ma piuttosto quella dei primi folk ( o country) singer bianchi, che proprio in quegli anni, partendo dal blues, stavano sviluppando quello che sarebbe poi diventato prima il “blue yodell” e poi il country. L’incontro col blues per Hurt avviene solo verso la prima metà degli anni ’20 quando egli era già un musicista affermato nella comunità ( le sue prime esperienze musicali sono state di tipo religioso come era solito in quegli anni) John rimase folgorato dalla musica del diavolo e la adattò al suo particolare modo di suonare creando un ibrido folk blues unico. Sulla sua tecnica strumentale e compositiva sono stati compiuti dei veri studi da parte dei musicologi a dimostrazione di quanto essa fosse allora innovativa. Questa consisteva in un fingerpicking a 3 dita (pollice ,medio ,indice) caratterizzato dal continuo e ripetuto uso dei bassi che ,a differenza di tutti i musicisti dell’epoca ( i quali vale la pena ricordarlo si guadagnavano da vivere suonando alle feste di paese e per questo dovevano far ballare la gente), non era però finalizzata alla melodia. Essa prende il nome di “double thumbing” che sta a significare il continuo alternare dei bassi sincopati, l’incastro ritmico e melodico di note ritmiche sulle corde basse e note melodiche su quelle acute. Le sue composizioni ad un primo ascolto possono sembrare semplici ma nascondono una complessità armonica notevole e un senso dell’arrangiamento unico in quegli anni, esse sembrano infatti concepite per un pubblico “colto” che vuole ascoltare la musica più che ballarla.talmente essa era elaborata nelle armonie.
