A thrilling action adventure based on the novel by Clive Cussler! Karl Hector & The Malcouns - Sahara Swing

For this endeavor Karl Hector teamed up with Jay Whitefield (Poets of Rhythm, The Whitefiled Brothers) and Thomas Myland and Zdenko Curlija of The Malcouns, along with a group of Munich-based musicians, all of which explains why much of Sahara Swing is coated in a warm blanket of groove with an additional layer of afrobeat mixed with just a smidgen of jazz. The underlying result is an album of global R&B.

Focused on instrumental riffing, Hector and company lay down some serious beat attitude on rambling numbers like \"Nyx\", which is broken into guitar, keyboard, and drum driven sections. Likewise, \"Followed Path\" kicks out guitar and keyboard dominated rolling thunder.

Organic sound effects, such as the sounds of flowing water and buzzing insects (all of which are derived from a wide array of percussive instruments) meander through songs like \"Transition J\" while a bugged out and slightly eerie sensibility bubbles underneath the title track and some hyper-ventilating afrobeat elements worm their way into the steady lumber of \"Psycles\". On \"Mystical Brotherhood\" the group goes for a down-tempo, piano and keyboard fueled shuffle that is as gritty as it is mellow. And \"Rush Hour\" is like some blaxploitation era rave-up.

On the downside portions of the album can be a bit experimental for the average listener, drifting off into bouts of percussive improve and detached groove in such a manner as to loose some of its focus. Thankfully many of these more divergent passages are short and mitigated to being between-song transitions.

Dubbing Sahara Swing as an R&B album may be a stretch, but since the \"R\" stands for \"rhythm\" and the \"B\" stands for \"blues\" it ain\'t much of a stretch. In fact Hector and The Malcouns have more R&B in their combined pinky fingers than most artists whose music is tossed into the category these days. Hector and crew have taken the ripest bits of jazz, funk, the blues, and injected them with so much energy and freeform experimental control that the end result is nothing short of being truly global R&B.
