Online Review by Miles Goosens: "Ryan Adams & the Esquires provided the biggest surprise of the evening for me. I never was on the bandwagon for Ryan's (former?) band, Whiskeytown. Though I liked them fine, they never struck me as deserving of the "alt-country Replacements" hype that surrounded them a couple of years ago. Come to think of it, I never was on the "Replacements are the last great rock band" bandwagon either, but I digress. Anyway, Ryan walked out with the Esquires, a surprise unto itself since the Esquires weren't listed on the bill (for those who don't know, the Esquires are David Rawlings and Gillian Welch's rock band alter ego) and delivered a stunning set of new originals. All of them were distortion-laden hellhound-on-my trail electric swamp-blues epics, with barely a trace of Whiskeytown in 'em. In fact, the thing that kept occurring to me during the set was "Dream Syndicate," though thinking about it in retrospect, I think Ryan's just come up with the album that P.J. Harvey should be making. Even more remarkably, Ryan mentioned from the stage that he and the Esquires wrote them all just last week! It sure didn't show -- Ryan and the band played as though they'd been on tour with these songs for years. They closed with a rousing if lyrically sanitized "Brown Sugar" (opting for "just like a *young* girl should"), and left me hungry for more. Ryan said something about having moved to Nashville during the last few weeks, so man! Will Rigby *and* Ryan Adams joining our hoppin' scene..."

On more than one occasion, Ryan Adams has played solo acoustic gigs that consisted almost entirely of songs he wrote the afternoon of the show, and after his 2001 album, Gold, finally gave him an audience outside the small but rabidly enthusiastic alt-country scene, the very prolific Adams seemed to waste no time laying down as many songs as he possibly could. If one believes what one reads in New Musical Express, Adams cut about four albums' worth of material during sessions with various musicians and producers within the space of a year (not even counting the much talked about but to date unheard four-track recordings of blues versions of all the songs from the Strokes' debut disc, Is This It). Sensibly enough, Adams and his record company decided that releasing such a huge flood of material wasn't in the best interest of either artist or label, and instead Adams cherry-picked these sessions into a 13-track collection, Demolition. Appropriately enough, Demolition sounds less like "the third Ryan Adams album" than a collection of stray tunes — some of which are very good, especially the lazy summer vibe of "Tennessee Sucks," the up-tempo acoustic twang of "Chin Up, Cheer Up," the winsome "Cry on Demand," and the heading-off-the-rails rocker "Starting to Hurt." But more than a few of the other songs on the album sound like rough drafts rather than completed works, and Demolition seems to lack a strong thematic or structural center. In short, Demolition sounds like a bunch of demos, which of course is just what it is, and while it preserves a few strong tunes and offers an insight into Adams' creative process, it also makes clear that even the rising wunderkind of Americana can benefit from a bit of judicious editing and polishing.

Former Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams claims to have written and recorded enough songs over the past several years to fill a four-CD collection--and that's in addition to his acclaimed 2001 breakthrough Gold. Wisely, Adams decided to skip the box set--hey, he's only 27--and issue a sort of "best of" compilation comprising 13 unreleased demos. Recorded at four different studio sessions in Nashville, Los Angeles, and Stockholm, with a cast of musicians that includes his road band the Pinkhearts, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Ethan Johns, Chris Stills, Bucky Baxter, and Greg Leisz, Demolition proves that Adams is still a work in progress: brilliant one moment, sloppy the next. When he's good, he's very good: the rousing country-rocker "Hallelujah," the brooding acoustic ballads "Dear Chicago" and "Tomorrow," and the jangly power-pop number "Gimme a Sign" are as fine as anything on Gold. But Adams sometimes lapses into mimicry, as he does on "Nuclear" and "Starting to Hurt," both of which could be outtakes from a U2 album. "Tennessee Sucks," a chronicle of a boredom-filled summer day in Nashville, sounds half-baked.
