- Plot -

Il commerciante Pezzella (Totò) tenta di corrompere il maresciallo Topponi (Aldo Fabrizi), che sta effettuando dei controlli nel suo negozio, con una serie di regali che però giungono ad un indirizzo sbagliato.
Si ritrovano \"per caso\" a caccia e al ritorno hYears un incidente stradale, e finiscono nella stessa camera dell\'ospedale. Una volta dimessi Pezzella ruba la borsa del maresciallo che contiene documenti che lo riguardano, ma consigliato dal parroco la restituisce. I due diventano così amici ed anche consuoceri.

- Review -

Il film è una splendida versione rovesciata di \"Guardie e ladri\", dove il \"ladro\", in questo caso è ricco; si tratta di una delle opere in cui rifulge al massimo grado la recitazione di de Curtis, che trova in quella di Aldo Fabrizi una perfezione quasi assoluta.
Il film presenta un grande spessore narrativo e una felice mano del regista Steno, che, senza Monicelli, firma forse il suo film migliore con Totò. La coppia evidenzia ancora una volta la caratteristica ormai collaudata, secondo la quale Totò, opportunamente sorretto, rivela il suo volto di clown Augusto. I due personaggi sono realistici e molto ben caratterizzati psicologicamente, con il loro retroterra familiare diverso (in \"Guardie e ladri\", per effetto di una situazione sociale livellatrice, era praticamente lo stesso), ma con problemi che sono identici. Totò, in una forma straordinaria, senza mai deformare il linguaggio, recita il suo ruolo arricchendolo sempre del suo istrionismo mai esagerato, che aggiunge al personaggio una qualità personalissima e umana: una ferma onestà. Il film è uno spaccato della società italiana che si avviava al boom economico degli anni \'60. L\'impianto recitativo complessivo di de Curtis è al massimo livello, con scene di un umorismo quasi irresistibile, come la sequenza della caccia, che è forse il vertice assoluto, dal punto di vista comico, di tutta la sua produzione; o come la scena in cui, per assecondare il maresciallo, all\'espressione \"la buon\'anima...\", credendolo un nostalgico del ventennio, si professa fascista, salvo poi a dichiararsi immediatamente \"anti\", dopo aver constatato che questi è un democratico; o la scena dell\'ospedale, dove evidenzia il suo volto da clown Augusto; e in tutti i duetti con Aldo Fabrizi, che non può certo definirsi \"spalla\".
Vero capolavoro nel genere della commedia, il film è anche un\' amara rappresentazione della vita vissuta e pertanto potrebbe rientrare, forzando un po\' le cose, anche nel genere \"commedia all\'italiana\". La maschera di Totò, disegnata con l\'apparente cinismo qualunquistico, rivela la sua essenza clownesca, messa in risalto nella sequenza della caccia dove Fabrizi svolge un evidente ruolo di clown bianco, riuscendo, in alcuni momenti, perfino a superare de Curtis. Louis de Funès, giustificato dalla coproduzione italo-francese, è egregiamente doppiato e riesce perfetto nella sua parte di contomo. Qualche piccola esagerazione sul piano del realismo (il televisore e il frigorifero regalati, la svendita con lo sconto del 75% ) è probabilmente dovuto a Metz, ma il film nell\'insieme, con un finale che, coniugando perfettamente l\'estremo realismo e la dimensione surreale (fare una società per giocare al totocalcio), ricompone la storia in un\'atmosfera amichevole (solo nella sequenza finale i due si chiamano per nome e si dYears del tu) con i rispettivi figli (Cathia Caro e Luciano Mario) che si avviano al matrimonio così tutti i problemi potrYears essere bonariamente risolti.
