The Electric Prunes were a small part of the experimental psychedelic scene of the late 60\'s. Quickly thereafter the band disappeared for a period of about 30 years before reforming as a recording and touring band a few years ago. The SoCal-based quintet experienced a bit of success by contributing two tracks to the Easy Rider soundtrack in 1969, but by 1970 the band had completely dissolved.

Originally released in 1967,this is the band\'s outstanding debut lp on superb reissue CD,with two bonus cuts tagged on.\"Ain\'t It Hard\" and \"Little Oliver\",I believe I\'ve seen before on some import compilation.Either way,they give the listener another reason to hunt down a copy of this psych classic.As for the actual album,\'I Had Too...\' sure conjures up some priceless memories.At least,for me.The band\'s only two hits are on here,the title cut,\"I Had Too Much To Dream\" and \"Get Me To The World On Time\".Just about every other track rules,like the psychedelic blow-out \"Sold To The Highest Bidder\",\"Luvin\'\",and the suggestive(for back then anyway)\"Try Me On For Size\".Most highly recommended.

I inadvertantly wrote a review for this deluxe re-issue under the banner of the original CD version, so this is my attempt to address the recently released, 7-bonus track edition of this stellar album. I can understand why people wouldn\'t know or care about Love, but then again they are probably the same people who think Britney Spears is an \"artist\". To the uninitiated, it helps to know that Love was Jim Morrison\'s favorite group; when \"Forever Changes\" was first issued in 1967, it was their third album for Elektra, who eventually signed The Doors and released that group\'s incredible debut the same year. If it weren\'t for Arthur Lee and Love: 1) Elektra would not have gotten into the rock game; 2) The Doors might not have gotten signed to Elektra (Arthur Lee saw the group play The Whisky a Go Go and referred them to Jac Holzman and Ahmet Ertugen); 3) Jimi Hendrix might not have been exposed to a recording studio until much later in life (Lee recorded Hendrix on a rare 45 in the early \'60\'s, and later included sessions with Jimi on subsequent Love LPs); and my life would still be the same. The re-issue offers a little insight into this deliberately mysterious group by supplying fans with outtakes from the original line-up\'s last session (\"You and I and Your Mind Belong Together\"), a demo version of one of the tracks (\"The Good Humor Man...\" re-titled as \"Hummingbirds\"), alternate mixes of classic Love tracks (\"You Set The Scene\" and \"Alone Again Or\", which emphasizes Brian Maclean\'s vocals more prominently), and even a song deleted from the original album completely (\"Wonder People\"), as well as the B-side \"Laughing Stock\" which is from the same session as \"You and I...\" Needless to say, the album sounds great, despite the original multi-track tapes being MIA. Lee seems like a prophet when he rattles off lines like \"The news of today will be the movies of tomorrow\"... Too bad the band went through all the tragic cliches that accompany bands that come close to stardom: infighting, ego trips, money issues, refusals to tour, line-up adds and drops, and the obligatory drug abuse that grew to mythic proportions... Unlike any other album released in 1967, this one shows both sides of the coin that was the Summer Of Love: Hippie pride paired with nihilism, romance with despair, mind-expansion with paranoia. Arthur Lee was onto something, and until he is released from jail in 2005, we may never hear anything this well-written and executed from the man ever again. You can hear in this one album where artists as diverse as The Damned, UFO, The Smiths, Baby Lemonade, Neil Young, The Hooters, Echo & The Bunnymen, and even John Frusciante of the Chili Peppers copped some of their best ideas; you can also hear how well Love incorporated their own influences and peers into their songs: you hear Dylan, Neil Young (again), Brian Wilson, The Byrds, mariachi and flamenco music, Memphis Blues, folk, and acid rock peek up here and there, but the overall sound and texture is pure Love. Take a risk, all you adventurous pop music fans out there who are looking for interesting, elegant melodies to sing along to as you drive around L.A. or wherever it is you may live.

Pioneering in more than their sound, Love was one of the first interracial bands in rock. In its 2006 obituary for Arthur Lee, who was born in Memphis but made his mark in Los Angeles, where he moved as a young boy, the New York Times wrote, “Mr. Lee called himself \'the first black hippie,\' and his band pushed boundaries...Love took the Sunset Strip rock scene by storm in 1965 with catchy but shifty songs, as playful as they were dark. Even in their sweetest moments, disorientation and nightmarish paranoia were never far away.”

When it was first released as a four-LP package in 1972, this marathon live recording hit #3 on Billboard\'s Pop album chart and was certified RIAA gold. Following up their 1971 album Chicago III, this historic set features all the early hits and spotlights Chicago at the peak of their initial success. Painstakingly remastered, it now includes a full disc of previously unreleased material showcasing their trademark horns, Robert Lamm\'s keyboards and vocals, and the guitar virtuosity of the late Terry Kath. The set\'s packaging makes a nod to the original LP release, with an outer cardboard slipcase, four CDs in individual jackets, a 36-page booklet with original LP artwork, and mini-reproductions of the three huge posters that were part of the original release.

Walter Parazaider (sax, woodwinds), Lee Loughnane (trumpet), James Pankow (trombone), Robert Lamm (keyboards, vocals), Terry Kath (guitar, vocals), Danny Seraphine (drums), and Peter Cetera (bass, vocals) formed Chicago in the Second City in 1967. They released their debut album, Chicago Transit Authority, in 1969. The double LP sold more than two million copies on the strength of sweet pop hits and psychedelic rock explorations that appealed to traditional Top 40 fans as well as hipper listeners tuning in to the new free-form FM radio.

This was just the start of Chicago\'s enduring popularity, which includes five consecutive #1 albums, 21 Top 10 singles, and worldwide sales of over 120 million. Chicago continues to be a major concert draw, their lineup now including Bill Champlin (keyboards, vocals), Jason Scheff (bass, vocals), Keith Howland (guitar), and Tris Imboden (drums), along with founding members Lamm, Parazaider, Loughnane, and Pankow.

The wait is finally over. Chicago\'s legendary four-album document of their sold-out week at Carnegie Hall is at last, reissued and remastered. In addition to the material that was included on the original 1971 album, there is a complete disc of unreleased material from the concerts as well as the original packaging and replicas of the original posters and booklet which came with the LP. Granted, THIS is the ultimate reissue of this classic live album.
As for the music itself, it is full of the raw energy that made Chicago so great during its early days. Instead of the short snappy pop songs and romantic ballads, you get extended jam-band cuts such as \"In The Country\", \"South California Purples\", \"Sing A Mean Tune Kid\" and \"It Better End Soon\". Additionally, there are stellar renditions of \"Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?\" (complete with a six-minute \'Free Form Intro\' from Mr. Chops, Robert Lamm), \"Questions 67 and 68\", \"25 or 6 to 4\", \"Beginnings\" and the band\'s plea for Nixon\'s resignation, \"A Song For Richard and His Friends\". All seven of Chicago\'s original band members are given due time in the spotlight and are full of the energy and vigour of an excited young band during their first shot of fame. Terry Kath\'s extended guitar solos on the aforementioned \"Purples\" and \"Sing A Mean Tune Kid\" are some of his best guitar solos on record full of freedom and endless invention.
As for the bonus material, there are tunes which were not released on the original \"Carnegie Hall\" album as well as alternate performances of several tracks on the original album. The \"Naseltones\" free form intro included here is another Robert Lamm piano improvisation which goes into a boogie motiff that has a slight hint of Dave Brubeck in its groove. In addition, \"Listen\" and Terry Kath\'s \"Hour In The Shower\" are rock solid and are worthy additions to the original album.
Hands down, this is an awesome trip down memory lane for those who were there to remember it, those who bought the album when it originally was released and those who discovered it years later and couldn\'t get enough of it. This is the early Chicago in their prime as they used to be.
Hats off to Chicago and Rhino Records for such a stellar reissue of this classic concert.

The first six BLACK SABBATH albums laid out the Ten Commandments of Heavy Metal, or depending on whom you

ask, it might just have been the first four. Either way, it’s undeniable – SABBATH had a huge impact on the Metal

world, arguably the largest and most forceful impact any band has ever had and most likely will have. After those

albums, though, the fan base is split deeper and wider than the American public is when it comes to politics. Some

fans renounce anything after “Sabotage,” discrediting any SABBATH fronted by Dio, Tony Martin, Ian Gillan, or Glenn

Hughes as, well, not BLACK SABBATH. On the other hand, there are some who sing the praises of the first six albums

and accept the band’s later works as solid efforts. Rare are the fans in either camp, however, that acknowledge the

existence of the in-between albums, “Technical Ecstasy” and “Never Say Die!” These albums are much maligned by

many casual and die-hard SABBATH fans alike. Now, I’ll go on the record and say that while I think that the hatred of

these two records is a bit exaggerated, I pretty much agree when it comes to “Technical Ecstasy.” On the other

hand, I do not have the same feelings about “Never Say Die!”
This album is a lot more Hard Rock-oriented than other BLACK SABBATH, less riff-driven and more focused on Tony

Iommi’s musical experimentations. The band had been incorporating new ideas into their songs ever since “Vol. 4,”

and each album found an increasing amount of pianos, synths, and other surprises. On “Technical Ecstasy,” the band

sounded bogged down by these experiments, which, coupled with Ozzy’s poor vocal delivery and the frail production,

seriously wounded the record. On “Never Say Die!” the experimentation fits in perfectly alongside the hard riffage,

resulting in a record with both variety and flow.
Sure, “A Hard Road” and “Shock Wave” are pretty nondescript rockers lacking the usual quality of Tony Iommi’s

trademarked riffs, but the other songs more than make up for it. The title track starts the album out in upbeat

fashion, and though the song is slightly weak sounding, it’s fun and very catchy. “Johnny Blade” sounds the most like

classic SABBATH here, though with futuristic synth worked into the song – and it actually sounds good, not forced!

“Junior’s Eyes” is a down-tempo emotional rocker, written by Geezer about Ozzy’s (at the time) recently deceased

father, and is tied with “Johnny Blade” for best song on here. So far, that makes three great tracks and two

somewhat boring ones.
The second half of the record gets pretty weird, and is probably the reason most people despise this record. It is

hardly recognizable as BLACK SABBATH at all. “Air Dance” is a bass-driven, jazzy song featuring mostly acoustic

guitars and pianos underneath Ozzy’s vocals – in the end, it sounds a lot like the mellow breaks worked into the

songs of “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” and “Sabotage,” but expanded into a full track. “Over To You” is another pretty

good song, with a nice angular riff and lots of piano flourishes and an emotional delivery by Ozzy. “Breakout” reminds

me of the distant cousin of “Supertzar” from “Sabotage,” featuring a nice Iommi riff accompanied by a horn section

and guitar soloing, which acts as a sort of an into track to “Swinging The Chain,” a heavy bluesy number sung by Bill

Ward with Ozzy on harmonica. This half of the album has nothing in the vein of “Iron Man” or “Children Of The

Grave,” but it definitely has its merits.
BLACK SABBATH tried a lot of new things on “Never Say Die!”, and for the most part, I’d say that they worked. Ozzy

sounds MUCH better than he did on “Technical Ecstasy,” though still a little flat compared to “Sabotage” and the

earlier records. I really think that this album would have been better received had it come directly after “Sabotage” –

“Technical Ecstasy” spelled the doom (no pun intended) of the Ozzy-era SABBATH. If “Technical Ecstasy” had never

existed, I’d bet that people would be talking instead about the classic first seven SABBATH albums, rather than just

the first six.
Then again, most people would probably disagree with a lot of what I’ve said in this review, so maybe I’m just

insane.

By 1976, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward had not only struggled with stardom and fame, dealt with heavy drug addictions, and faced writer’s block and creative struggles, but they had also released six classic albums. Despite the impressive resume, the band was in a fragile position, with this seventh album potentially making or breaking their future. Talk about pressure, eh?
Even the most devout BLACK SABBATH fans often disregard “Technical Ecstasy,” and many flat out despise it. It’s not hard to see why – this album is drastically different from classics such as “Paranoid” and “Master Of Reality.” The dark, spooky cover art of the band’s past has been replaced with a strange and abstract modern piece, which most definitely caught some fans off-guard. The music found on this album is quite different, as well, focusing less on Iommi’s massive riffs and more on Hard Rock aesthetics and experimental dynamics. The opener “Back Street Kids” is a fast-paced, rip-roaring track which is soured by Ozzy’s frail vocal delivery, which actually mars a good bit of the album due to its bad production and general lack of intensity. I found this to be a real disappointment after his great performance on “Sabotage.” The experimental side really kicks in with “It’s Alright,” a soft and poppy piano and acoustic guitar ballad sung by drummer Bill Ward. Until this point, “It’s Alright” was definitely the most un-SABBATH-like track BLACK SABBATH had recorded, and it feels strangely out of place on the record. “Rock ‘N’ Roll Doctor” is pure party rock spoiled by poor lyrics, and “Gypsy” comes off as uninspired “Rock ‘N’ Roll” filler.
Despite the rough waters, there are some real gems on here. Sounding the most like classic BLACK SABBATH out of all of the record, “You Won’t Change Me” is a crawling, riff-driven number with excellent use of keyboards. “She’s Gone” is a soft ballad, closer to “Solitude” from “Master Of Reality” than it is to “It’s All Right,” led by Ozzy on vocals and featuring strings and softly plucked acoustic guitars. It never reaches the level of melancholy found on “Solitude,” but it stands on it’s own as a really good track. “Dirty Women,” a song about prostitution featuring a nice chunky main riff, reminds a lot of the material found on “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath,” and is one of the few songs from this period that still finds its way into the band’s live set. Even these tracks, however, are still damaged by the album’s weak production and Ozzy’s sub-par vocals.
Three good songs out of eight poorly produced tracks do not make a good album, especially by BLACK SABBATH standards. The album isn’t terrible, in fact, it’s quite listenable despite being somewhat unimpressive, but it’s definitely a massive weak spot in the Ozzy-era SABBATH catalogue

All things must change and with the release of \"Sabotage\", SABBATH\'s sixth studio offering the writing was on the wall for the greatest Metal-band in history. This album marked the end of the classic line-up (but not for the last time!) and as tensions grew in the band most notably between Ozzy and Iommi the discord and animosity brought the group together for one final charge resulting in another SABBATH-masterpiece.
\"Hole In The Sky\" just bursts through the speakers, its heavy riff dispelling any fears that SABBATH had given up the Metal-ghost that many fans had thought lost on \"Sabbath Bloody Sabbath\". The monster riff to the classic \"Symptom Of The Universe\" is amongst Iommi\'s heaviest, Ozzy vocals strain to great effect over the pounding drums of Ward and Butler\'s bass. There is finality about this piece that is all the more evident given that as a group SABBATH would never record a better album again.
Why bother reviewing the rest of the album when it is obvious that this along with the previous five are necessities in your CD-collection, SABBATH have had more returns than Lazarus, but to this day their first six albums are devastating pieces of Heavy Metal-music and although Ronnie James Dio did nothing to shame the SABBATH name it is to the Ozzy-era that most fans return.
Will we ever see their like again?

Though they are best known as the planet\'s premier heavy-metal band, Black Sabbath\'s major contribution has been to successfully capture the gist of specifically Seventies culture through their music. They relate to this impersonal, mechanical decade much as Delta bluesmen and their Chicago spin-offs related to their eras—by synthesizing collective feelings and giving their contemporaries hope by revealing the disaffection that units all of them. In that remote but real sense, Black Sabbath might well be considered true Seventies bluesmen.
Many will no doubt laugh, but I can think of no other group that has so consistently spoken in the musical language of its times. The power chord, that brief but brutal third-generation staple, has always been Sabbath\'s major medium, the aural twin of the metallic age surrounding us. And, as such technical advances as the mellotron and Moog have risen to the musical fore, they\'ve been incorporated into Sabbath\'s sonic setting, the computerized musical counterparts of a cold, programmed world.
But it\'s Sabbath\'s lyrics that have been the instant conveyor of their message, accompanying a dedicated cadre through a multiplicity of emotions and worldly experiences. Ossie Osbourne possesses an eternal teenager\'s tones, voicing the vicarious existence of youth \"lost in the wheels of confusion.\" On songs like \"Iron Man,\" \"Wicked World\" and \"Children of the Grave\" he\'s blended with the band in a well-nigh perfect vocal/instrumental portrayal of the violently schizophrenic emotions of the ostracized elite, riddled with ridicule for their latter-day Cassandrian visions.
Through drugs (\"Sweet Leaf\" and \"Snowblind\") and religion (\"After Forever\") Sabbath have stayed with the quest for an answer, culminating their search in such heavy-metal odes as \"Into The Void\" and the spectacular \"Supernaut,\" the latter revealing in its final verse their belief that sanity is assured only through dogged belief in one\'s self to the exclusion of all else.
Which brings us to Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath, on which the band both fully accepts this dictum and grows comfortable with it. Through enough solid heavy-metal to satisfy even the staunchest metallurgist (\"Sabbra Cadabra,\" \"Looking For Today\" and the title tune lie firmly within the band\'s accustomed format—a logical extension of the Who\'s classic mid-Sixties formula) they search for peace in the eye of the hurricane of life. In fact, this record transcends third-generation rock in that it possesses a degree of internal intricacy that belies popular conceptions of heavy-metal. The use of tempo changes and electronic keyboards to cast liquid emotions makes Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath an extraordinarily gripping affair.
\"The blues oughtta make you wanna cry one minute, and make you wanna get up and dance the next.\" That\'s what Black Sabbath have always done for this believer, and in doing it again, Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath is nothing less than a complete success.
