Il protagonista nasce infatti nella Parigi del 1738 con un olfatto straordinario che gli consente di riconoscere nel dettaglio fragranze e aromi, anche lontanissimi. La sfida di portare sul grande schermo una storia complessa, basata sulle suggestioni dell'odorato, pesa sulle spalle del tedesco Tom Tykwer, rivelatosi a livello internazionale nel 1998 con il frenetico e divertente Lola Corre (pare che in molti in passato, tra cui anche Kubrick e Scorsese, abbiano rinunciato). Il regista adotta per la trasposizione un taglio di quasi assoluta fedeltà al testo letterario, cercando di mantenere gli eventi chiave e posticipando solo il momento in cui il protagonista, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, scopre con sgomento, in antitesi al talento che lo contraddistingue, di non emettere alcun odore corporale. La linearità facilita la comprensione, ma lo stratagemma per rendere chiaro allo spettatore l'evolversi della vicenda e il punto di vista del protagonista (nel libro con pochissime battute di dialogo) non è dei più felici, perché si affida a una fastidiosa voce narrante che accompagna le svolte del racconto proprio nei momenti in cui la visionarietà della regia avrebbe dovuto supplire alle parole. Tra l'altro l'inizio del libro, così come nel film (a parte il superfluo flash-forward del prologo), è di forte impatto e la voce off si limita a esplicitare ciò che gli occhi sono già in grado di cogliere. Ma l'escamotage serve per giustificare la voce fuori campo in altri passaggi successivi, che altrimenti le sole immagini non avrebbero sufficientemente sorretto. Ridondanze a parte, bisogna dare merito a Tykwer di avere complessivamente rispettato lo spirito del testo di Süskind. Ciò che manca è il guizzo, l'estro, se vogliamo, per restare in tema, il profumo, che la sola successione dei fatti non riesce sempre a evocare. Mostrare non sempre equivale a trasmettere. Per intenderci, è piuttosto banale che per dare l'idea di un profumo meraviglioso le immagini ammicchino a una primavera di alberi in fiore dai colori accesi. Ci sarebbe stato bisogno di qualcosa di più forte, sfacciato, meno routinario, davvero in grado di trasportare altrove, nonostante il tentativo, solo in parte riuscito, di delegare l'incanto alle differenti scelte musicali della colonna sonora. Quanto al potente finale, la sceneggiatura ammorbidisce le motivazioni del protagonista (si glissa su amoralità e sete di potere spingendo sul bisogno d'amore) e la regia ammanta di poesia ciò che sulla carta è invece molto più viscerale. La sensazione è di assistere a una messa in scena in cui compromessi produttivi (l'investimento, superiore ai 50 milioni di dollari, è palesemente ingente) e scelte stilistiche ispirate alla cautela hanno anestetizzato il risultato, probabilmente per rendere il prodotto digeribile alla più ampia fetta di pubblico possibile.
