All the world's a stage and folk legend Nick Drake--a frail, reclusive romantic whose music was sad but beautifully emancipating and who died young in 1974 in mysterious circumstances--was one of life's reluctant players. As epithets go, the lyrics to Made to Love Magic ("I was born to sail away into a land of never, not to be tied to an old stone grave") aptly convey how Nick Drake's legend continues to gather no moss, even some three decades after his lonely tranquilized farewell. Enthusiastic newcomers should start with any of Drake's three studio albums (Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter, Pink Moon) and Patrick Humphries' definitive biography but Made to Love Magic is, nevertheless, essential. Consisting of rare and unheard tracks (many of which have even avoided the mucky paws of the keenest bootlegger) and compiled by those closest to him (sister Gabrielle, engineer John Wood, and fellow Cambridge University student and string-arranger Robert Kirby) the album is a labor of love. Lost amateur recordings of Nick Drake at University in Cambridge, outtakes from the Five Leaves Left album, Robert Kirby's unused string arrangements for "Magic" and "Time of No Reply" finally restored, an early rendition of "Three Hours" featuring Rebop Kwaku Baah (Traffic, Can) on percussion and remixed versions of those despairing final songs from July 1974, including the newly discovered "Tow the Line." This is surely the final word on Nick Drake; unless, of course, those Aix-en-Provences tapes and that mythical lost Peel session from August 1969 ever make themselves known.

Long circulating as a tape among hardcore fans, the 18 solo acoustic songs on Tanworth-in-Arden 1967/68 were recorded by Nick Drake at home; most or all of them were probably laid down before he had ever entered a studio. The sound quality is fuzzy, but given how little Drake recorded before his death, and how absolutely no unreleased material exists other than the four CDs included on his Fruit Tree box set, this is a Holy Grail (or at least a silver goblet) of sorts for Drake fanatics. Most of the material is in a far more traditional acoustic folk and blues vein than his official releases, which show a big leap in both songwriting maturity and instrumental sophistication. Here Nick sounds much like very early (acoustic) Donovan, covering traditional folk songs, "Summertime," "Get Together," and early Dylan; his originals are often quite derivative of these influences (and several compositions credited to Drake on the liner notes are in fact covers, or extremely derivative of existing standards). The best cuts -- "Winter Is Gone," "The Reason of the Seasons," "To the Garden" -- show the emergence of a more idiosyncratic talent. Minor complaints: four songs from the original tape are missing (two do appear on Fruit Tree), and some entertaining between-song banter has been eliminated.

The album cover claims that the posthumously released Time Of No Reply contains "10 previously unreleased tracks, including 7 completely new songs, plus the 4 'last session' tracks" that were recorded in 1974. Rather than being mere bottom of the barrel scrapings, this clearing of the vaults more often than not simply offers songs that Nick had recorded but chosen not to release during his brief recording career. The fact that some of these songs had been forgotten and were almost lost to time (in some instances saved by a lucky tape retrieval) merely makes Time Of No Reply all the more special. That said, this album is obviously not the place to start with Nick Drake, and is more for fans who’ve already come under his spell (i.e. anyone who’s ever heard any of his other albums). Interestingly enough, some of his earliest songs (“Time Of No Reply,” “Clothes Of Sand”) have more in common with the stark simplicity of Pink Moon than Five Leaves Left, even though they were recorded during sessions for the latter, while “I Was Made To Love Magic” is the only song here with any orchestration. True, some of these songs are unremarkable, but I never tire of “Fly” and “The Thoughts of Mary Jane” (less so "Man In A Shed"), and these stripped down alternate takes give the originals a run for their money. In addition, primitive home recordings such as "Been Smoking Too Long" and "Strange Meeting II," and emotionally agitated later songs such as “Black Eyed Dog” and “Hanging On A Star” are absolutely necessary in completing the musical picture painted by the enigmatic young loner that was Nick Drake.

Del talento di Nick si accorge il bassista dei Fairport Convention, Ashley Hutchings ed entusista di Nick lo presenta a Joe Boyd, proprietario e produttore della casa Witchseason, in seguito acquistata dalla Island Record, Joe decide di metterlo subito sotto contratto. E' il 1969, Nick decide di abbandonare gli studi e nel settembre dello stesso anno pubblica il suo primo disco "Five leaves left", facendo arrangiare i suoi pezzi ad un amico dell'universit�, l'allora sconosciuto Robert Kirby. Gli arrangiamenti degli archi sono talmente riusciti che tutti alla casa discografica ne rimangono rapiti. Purtroppo il disco vendette pochissime copie, anche a causa della difficolt� dell'artista di suonare dal vivo o di rilasciare interviste. Questo � il disco di esordio di Nick Drake, quel disco che non gli diede la fama, in un periodo in cui l'attenzione del pubblico era rivolta verso il rock allora preponderante. In quegli anni, gli anni di Woodstock e degli artisti impegnati socialmente e sempre in mostra, la figura di un giovane "songwriter" di campagna, schivo e malinconico, non poteva che passare inosservata dai pi�. Il fatto che fosse schivo e riservato, che fuggisse a interviste e concerti dal vivo, fecero si che il suo talento artistico, il suo "genio", come viene universalmente riconosciuto oggi, fosse pressoch� sconosciuto al momento.

"After two albums of tastefully orchestrated folk-pop, albeit some of the least demonstrative and most affecting around, Drake chose a radical change for what turned out to be his final album. Not even half-an-hour long, with 11 short songs and no more -- he famously remarked at the time that he simply had no more to record -- Pink Moon more than anything else is the record that made Drake the cult figure he remains. Specifically, Pink Moon is the bleakest of them all; that the likes of Belle and Sebastian are fans of Drake may be clear enough, but it's doubtful they could ever achieve the calm, focused anguish of this album, as harrowing as it is attractive. No side musicians or outside performers help this time around -- it's simply Drake and Drake alone on vocals, acoustic guitar, and a bit of piano, recorded by regular producer Joe Boyd but otherwise untouched by anyone else. The lead-off title track was eventually used in a Volkswagen commercial nearly 30 years later, giving him another renewed burst of appreciation -- one of life's many ironies, in that such an affecting song, Drake's softly keened singing and gentle strumming, could turn up in such a strange context. The remainder of the album follows the same general path, with Drake's elegant melancholia avoiding sounding pretentious in the least thanks to his continued embrace of simple, tender vocalizing. Meanwhile, the sheer majesty of his guitar playing -- consider the opening notes of "Radio" or "Parasite" -- makes for a breathless wonder to behold. If anyone needs confirmation as to why artists like Mark Eitzel, Elliot Smith, Lou Barlow, or Robert Smith hold Drake close to their hearts, it's all here, still as beautiful as the day it was released."
