La celeberrima serie Need For Speed inizia a prendere forma attorno al 1992 ad opera del team di sviluppo Distinctive Software (Vancouver), già famoso per aver prodotto giochi di guida come Stunts e Test Drive 2: The Duel. Nel 1994 Need For Speed approdò sulla sfortunata console made in Panasonic, il 3DO, ed a causa della scarsa diffusione della stessa dovette aspettare circa un anno prima di vedersi riconosciuti i pregi che comunque lo permeavano. Nel 1995 infatti NfS fu convertito per Psx e l\'anno seguente su Satrurn. La saga si è evoluta molto nel corso della sua storia e, cambiando spesso team di sviluppo e console, arriva oggi a noi nelle vesti di nuovo gioco di guida portatile per Psp. Inutile sottolineare come questa non sia una sorpresa particolarmente gradita, poiché la saga sembra aver perso da qualche anno quel mordente che nei primi anni di vita la caratterizzava e, pertanto, non indugeremo oltre e descriveremo quale esperienza di gioco questo Need for Speed Undercover ci ha proposto.

Da non imitare su comuni strade

Non appena avrete avviato il gioco verrete subito messi all\'inseguimento di un\'auto, in modo che non possa essere frainteso lo spirito della produzione.
Le modalità di gioco sono tre: Carriera (modalità principale), Gara veloce (arcade) e Multigiocatore (ad Hoc o tramite infrastruttura). Attraverso la modalità carriera avrete accesso alla mappa del gioco, al garage, alle statistiche di gara ed all\'opzione “salva”. La prima zona cui avrete accesso è denominata Sunset Hills ed è divisa in molteplici sotto-zone tramite cui accedere finalmente alle gare che il gioco vi proporrà. Esse saranno come di consueto di svariati tipi; vediamo di descriverne alcuni.
Sprint: Su di un percorso dalla lunghezza limitata, dovrete essere in grado di arrivare primi distanziando gli avversari.
Giro di eliminazione: questo è davvero classico ma sempre divertente (specie in multiplayer); ad ogni giro lascia la gara chi arriva ultimo. Vince chi taglia per primo il traguardo nell\'ultimo giro.
Circuito: La classica gara in cui vince chi, alla fine dell\'ultimo giro, riesce ad arrivare primo.
Inseguimento: Vincerete raggiungendo l\'avversario e distanziandolo convenientemente.
I comandi sono di default così assegnati: con X accellererete, con O rallenterete il tempo (simile al classico “bullet Time”, utile nelle fasi più concitate della corsa), con quadrato frenerete o, se fermi, innesterete la retromarcia, con R userete il freno a mano, con L azionerete il turbo (gradevole l\'effetto grafico conseguente), con “Su” sul D-pad cambierete visuale (3 disponibili: dal paraurti senza cofano in vista, da immediatamente dietro l\'auto e da lontano), con “Giù” la visuale diverrà temporaneamente posteriore e con Sinistra e Destra (o con l\'analogico) sterzerete. Le opzioni principali sono anch\'esse abbastanza canoniche: regolerete i volumi di gioco, deciderete se ascoltare o meno i dialoghi dei poliziotti che inevitabilmente vi correranno dietro, sceglierete se il tachimetro dovrà mostrare la vostra velocità in km o miglia orarie, se attivare l\'autosalvataggio e se vorrete che la minimappa sullo schermo ruoti o meno. A proposito dello schermo: tramite esso terrete nota in gara della vostra posizione, delle distanze che vi separeranno dagli avversari, della vostra velocità e dei livelli di nitro e tempo rallentabile a vostra disposizione. In alto sarà altresì visibile una sorta di specchietto retrovisore che, malauguratamente e probabilmente per non rallentare ulteriormente il già fiacco motore grafico del gioco, mostrerà soltanto i fari delle vetture dietro di voi.

Il cuore di Need for Speed Undercover

Ogni gara, se portata bene a termine, vi permetterà di incrementare il vostro patrimonio. Tramite i soldi acquisterete ovviamente nuove auto (all\'inizio sarà possibile sceglierne una tra tre, noi abbiamo scelto la Pontiac Firebird che ci sembrava la più caratteristica) o potenzierete e personalizzerete le vostre. Le modifiche saranno di due tipologie: estetiche e prestazionali. A livello estetico agirete sulla carrozzeria, sugli alettoni, sui cofani, sui cerchi, sul colore dei vetri e sulle verniciature. Ovvio che potrete anche applicare una discretamente vasta quantità di aerografie sul vostro bolide. Le modifiche all\'impianto prestazionale riguarderanno invece il motore, la manovrabilità (sospensioni), il telaio, la turbina e l\'N2O.
La modalità Gara Veloce sarà utile in quei momenti in cui non troppo sarà il tempo a vostra disposizione; sceglierete tra gara singola e corsa immediata. La prima vi permetterà di spaziare tra gli eventi gara (eliminazione, battaglia in autostrada etc..), gli eventi ricercato (fuga, stendi lo sbirro etc...) o gli eventi boss (guardia e ladri, caccia etc...). In Corsa immediata sceglierete solo la macchina che vorrete guidare.

Grafica e sonoro

Oltre ad una certa mancanza di inventiva che sottende purtroppo l\'intera esperienza ludica che Need for Speed Undercover può offrire, è da segnalare un lato tecnico piuttosto mediocre. Le macchine sono realizzate in maniera superficiale: il numero di poligoni che le compone è insufficiente a determinare una resa grafica anche solo discreta delle stesse. Le texture non sono di buona qualità, né quelle applicate ai bolidi né quelle dell\'asfalto. Gli sfondi sfarfallano ed abbiamo notato un effetto di bad clipping talvolta fastidioso e, come se ciò non bastasse, il gioco rallenta spesso e pure visibilmente. Lievemente migliore il giudizio attorno al comparto sonoro, fosse soltanto perchè le musiche sono personalizzabili.

Commento Finale

Riteniamo Need for Speed Undercover un prodotto sostanzialmente mediocre. La mancanza di inventiva che sottende il gioco non consentirà all\'incauto videogiocatore di divertirsi per più di qualche ora; un appeal grafico sotto la media non invoglierà molti a giocarlo. A prima vista esso potrà anche apparire altamente scenografico, ma basteranno davvero pochi minuti per accorgersi dei difetti che tuttavia lo permeano. La saga di Need for Speed, benchè gloriosa, necessita urgentemente di nuova linfa vitale. Sviluppatori sempre diversi e il loro progressivo adagiarsi sugli allori la stanno davvero rovinando.
