The Million Dollar Hotel: Music from the Motion Picture is the soundtrack to the 2000 film, The Million Dollar Hotel. The album was released alongside the film in March 2000, and featured Bono as its executive producer, with new music from U2 and other artists.
"The Ground Beneath Her Feet" was written by Salman Rushdie, based on his book of the same name. The soundtrack version is a different mix from the one used in the film, which was not released. Along with "Stateless," "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" was recorded for U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind album, however was released on this soundtrack instead. "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" was later released as a bonus track on British and Japanese versions of All That You Can't Leave Behind. "Stateless" was later released on the Unreleased & Rare album of U2's digital box set, The Complete U2.

"The First Time" originally appeared on U2's 1993 Zooropa album. The version on the soundtrack is identical to the one on the album, and was produced by Flood, Brian Eno, and The Edge.

"Anarchy in the USA" is a Spanish cover of the Sex Pistols' 1976 "Anarchy in the U.K."

100mila copie vendute in tre giorni, tanta e tale � la voglia di U2 che c’� in Italia. E d’altra parte, ormai si sa che una colonna sonora di Wim Wenders � qualcosa di pi� che un semplice accompagnamento a effetto per una pur bella pellicola, basta ripensare a “Fino alla fine del mondo”, “Lisbon story”, per non parlare di “Buena Vista Social Club”. Nel caso di “Million dollar hotel”, poi, questa consapevolezza si arricchisce di un ulteriore elemento di spinta, che sta nel fatto di essere film creatura della mente di Bono, il salvifico cantante degli U2, l’unico uomo sulla terra capace di dare magia anche a due parole tristi e spente come D’Alema e Berlusconi, ma soprattutto un artista di calibro decisamente rock. Nell’hotel dei perdenti che fa da set al film, la musica degli U2 e della Million Dollar Hotel band ci sta da Dio, notturna e bluette come sono i colori dominanti del film: tre i brani cantati da Bono con la band (“Never let me go”, “Falling at your feet”, “Dancin’ shoes”), due gli inediti assoluti degli U2 (“The ground beneath her feet”, attuale singolo, e “Stateless”) pi� un ripescaggio da Zooropa (“The first time”), in totale quasi un album in proprio, per giunta prodotto da Brian Eno e Daniel Lanois, il duo imbattibile di “Unforgettable fire” e “Joshua tree”. Arrivano indicazioni precise per il nuovo lavoro degli U2? Qualcosa, se si crede a quello che si ascolta qui e se si sposa questo Cd con l’esibizione sanremese di Bono e The Edge: di sicuro un ritorno ad atmosfere pi� rurali, elettriche ma non elettroniche, un perfetto connubio tra i loop e i mille suoni di Eno e le sane chitarre rupestri di Lanois, con canzoni semplici-quasi-elementari e la voglia di puntare molto sull’interpretazione piuttosto che sugli effetti speciali. Un ritorno agli U2 animisti, insomma, come visto a Sanremo con l’esecuzione di “All I want is you”, e come confermato da questa colonna sonora che oltre ai due inediti offre un brano gi� uscito su Zooropa, “The first time”, che di “All I want is you” sembra un prolungamento naturale. Musica fatta di spazzole alle batteria, di poco basso ma grosso, di grandi atmosfere: esattamente la dimensione da cui gli U2 provenivano e alla quale sentono probabilmente di appartenere ancora. C’� da giurare che il gruppo irlandese avr� ancora molti assi nella manica da giocare per il suo album solista, sicuramente pi� ufficiale: per intanto questo album potr� riavvicinarli a quanti pensavano di averli persi sulla china di “Achtung baby”, prima e di “Pop”, poi, anche se non si pu� far finta di non vedere che quello che gli U2 ci regalano in questa colonna sonora non � un passo avanti in nessuna direzione, ma solo uno splendido deja vu. A completare il soundtrack una versione di “Satellite of love” di Milla Jovovich che fa piacere definire inutile, soprattutto quando nella testa risuona ancora quella di Reed o quella degli U2 con Reed virtuale, e diverse esperienze complementari targate MDH band, un coacervo di grandi musicisti come Eno, Lanois, Jon Hassell, Bill Frisell, Brad Meldhau, Greg Cohen. Unico e ultimo sprazzo di energia, nella solenne poetica wendersiana rispecchiata in pieno dalla tracklist, � la cover di Tito Larriva di “Anarchy in the UK”, che cambia ubicazione geografica e diventa “in the USA”. Un invito alla rivoluzione dal pi� americano dei registi europei, alle prese in questo film con i danni irreversibili del reaganismo anni ’80.
