- Trama -

Durante le guerre napoleoniche, il capitano Jack Aubrey, famoso combattente della marina britannica, è al comando della H.M.S. Surprise. Attaccato da un nemico molto più forte, la sua nave subisce gravi danni e il suo equipaggio molti feriti, ma combattuto dal dovere Aubrey decide di attraversare i due oceani per intercettare e distruggere il suo nemico.

Napoleone spadroneggia in Europa e la Francia concede le patenti per la guerra di \"corsa\" alle sue navi per fiaccare la flotta inglese. Questo le scenario in cui la fregata del Capitan Jack \"Lucky\" Aubrey (Russel Crowe) si trova a navigare sulla scia dell\'Acheron, nave francese di stazza superiore che fa rotta verso le isole Galapagos per saccheggiare le baleniere di sua maestà.
L\'Acheron oltre ad essere potente è anche particolarmente sfuggente, tanto da guadagnarsi il soprYearsme di nave fantasma per la sua capacità di apparire all\'improvviso e sempre con vento a favore (elemento fondamentale in uno scontro).
Benché profondamente colpito, sia nel fasciame che nell\'orgoglio, ed in palese inferiorità, il Capitano Aubrey decide di inseguire la sua preda contro il parere del suo amico, nonché medico di bordo, il Dr. Maturin (Paul Bettany) iniziando una caccia che potrebbe risolversi ben diversamente da quanto inizialmente sperato.

Peter Weir dirige molto abilmente questo kolossal tratto dai libri Patrick O\'Brian (una ventina) o meglio da Ai confini del mare. L\'abilità del regista emerge più che dalle scene d\'azione - poche - dalla caratterizzazione dei personaggi. Master & Commander infatti è un pò spiazzante; chi si aspetta un sorta di action-movie marino si troverà invece ad esplorare il microcosmo di una nave, i vari personaggi ed a seguire una sorta di percorso di crescita degli ufficiali più giovani all\'ombra della figura di Aubrey. Anche l\'impostazione generale del film risente di questo percorso obbligato e di certo non innovativo, in cui l\'inseguimento del nemico e lo scontro finale, vengono scanditi dalle tipiche \"storie di bordo\": bonaccia, tempesta, problemi d\'equipaggio e contrasti d\'amicizia, ma anche presa di coscienza delle proprie potenzialità e maturazione degli animi acerbi.Insomma un gran minestrone che riesce comunque a mantenere il suo fascino forse grazie anche allo spirito della marina di Sua Maestà.

Curiosità: l\'equipaggio della \"Surprise\" approda a terra e gioca a cricket lanciando la palla \"da sopra\" anziché \"da sotto\". Questa tecnica fu introdotta nel 1850 (peraltro un tipo di lancio illegale che fu ammesso solo nella metà degli anni sessanta) ed essendo il film ambientato nel 1805...

La chicca: come in tutti i libri di O\'Brian sulla nave ci sono tre cYearsni battezzati: \"Jumping Billy\", \"Sudden Death\" e \"Willful Murder\". Noi ne vediamo solo due perché la cinepresa cambia angolazione prima di inquadrare il terzo.

La frase: \"Questa nave è la nostra patria, questa nave è l\'Inghilterra!\"

La Surprise, vascello della Royal Navy guidato dal Capitano Jack \"Lucky\" Aubrey, e la Acheron, nave francese di stazza e potenza di fuoco estremamente superiori, si sfuggono e si inseguono, a viso aperto o col favore della nebbia, si scambiano di ruolo da preda a predatore. A bordo della Surprise, la patriottica devozione di Aubrey si scontra con l’etica scientifica del suo amico e medico di bordo Maturin, ma sapranno trovare una nell’altra la chiave per il successo dei propri scopi.
Mettete una montagna di soldi in mano ad ognuno dei registi di Hollywood e state certi che, dopo averla resa poco più che una collinetta per onorare i cachet dei maggiori divi del momento, nove su dieci faranno un film mediocre, che farà storcere il naso ai critici, che avrà il sapore del “già visto”, eccetera. Peter Weir è il decimo tra questi registi. La sua montagna d’oro si trasforma nel sontuoso Master & Commander, un film compatto come un megalite. Sebbene realizzato interamente a mollo nell’Oceano, M&C non fa acqua da nessuna parte e non sono necessari grandi giri di parole per spiegarne la grandiosità: gli attori sono eccellenti (ad essere sinceri, Bettany sembra un candidato più credibile di Crowe alla statuetta più ambita del mondo, anche se quale attore non protagonista); la regia è essenziale e di stile, lasciando parlare tutta la serie di meravigliosi elementi scenografici: dalle navi ai costumi passando per le isole Galapagos, mai viste al cinema, che lasciano intontiti per la loro bellezza; la fotografia riesce a virare con piacevole disinvoltura da una prima parte grigia e nebbiosa ad una seconda soleggiata e splendente, con nel mezzo una tempesta da cineteca dei sogni.
Non bastasse, in M&C c’è anche il sentimento - e non certo l’amore, visto che la presenza delle donne è ridotta ad una ventina di secondi di bellezze caraibiche. Cuore e testa (quello del Capitano Crowe che si fa travolgere dall’orgoglio e dal fervore patriottico e questa del dottor Maturin che sacrificherebbe la sua stessa vita nel nome della scienza) possono convivere senza dover sacrificare il “terzo incomodo”, l’amicizia: e come, se non traendo forza l’uno dall’altra e viceversa? Connubio creativo meravigliosamente sottolineato, in chiave metaforica, da Capitano e Dottore che, al riparo della cabina, danno vita col mescolarsi dei loro strumenti da camera ad una creatura armoniosa e magica come solo la musica è. E quando i due si scambiano le partiture, cambia la musica ma la magia resta la stessa. Anzi, si fa più bella di prima.Con questo film che sa di Ben Hur più che di Titanic, diamo un caloroso bentornato al Kolossal con la K maiuscola.

Un kolossal eccellente, compatto come un megalite, che non fa acqua da nessuna parte
Weir, grande regista di Picnic a Hanging Rock e Truman Show; Crowe, premio Oscar per Il gladiatore; lo scenario unico delle Galapagos; tempeste vere miste ad effetti speciali da urlo. Con queste credenziali, c\'è poco da aggiungere!

PLOT
