By The Raven, Lou Reed chases the dream of almost all rock musicians of a certain age \': to be considered, if only for a moment, a serious composer. For a second strip of black leather jacket and exchange them for a copy of \"New Yorker\". Being at home in Soho rather than Greenwich Village. Become the subject of conversation in the clubs of Lower Manhattan, the Downtown Music Gallery and The Wire.

The Reed of New York this record remains until marrow. The center of gravity \'of The Raven and\' sound still celebrated from New York, the masterpiece of 1991: scratchy guitars and solid, no concession to solismi and dry battery, all drums and snare. And \'This is the sound of songs such as Edgar Allan Poe or A Thousand Departed Friends, located in a strategic position in the tracklist. Around this center of gravity and very \'added: sections woodwinds, dried and arcigne as the guitars of Reed and Rathke, notes of piano and the ubiquitous cello Jane Scarpantoni. A variety \'destined to be a new\' perhaps confusing for those who were usual ability \'to move in the Reed within monolithic disks.

Officially, the music is at the service of the lyric of The Raven, a concept known as dedicated to Edgar Allan Poe wrote on commission from a German theater. The tribute to Poe and \'source of a further injection of diversity\' in the disc, which includes reading a couple of texts on the part of Elizabeth Ashley and Amanda Plummer, the use of other objects that replace Reed and accompany singing and a couple of ballads almost whispered. Like New York, The Raven and \'a disco and listen from beginning to end, a gallery of poetic-literary ambitions that require\' a minimum of English to be fully appreciated (but all can enjoy the Anglo-Saxon art dell\'allitterazione beautifully put on show by Willem Dafoe in the song The Raven).

Much has\' also speculated on the alleged similarities between Poe, Reed and their poetics. We believe that many of these readings, that \"force\" a Reed emotionally aligned with the stories told by Poe, ends up being misleading with respect to The Raven (not to mention the career of Reed). On the one hand, and \'all too easy to point out how the themes of urban singer typically poorly connected with the mood of the poet-writer of Baltimore, some left but not so\' negative and nihilistic as that of Reed. And the other \'more\' delicate look like The Raven is both \'a tribute, but not in the sense of a flattening of the Reed \"aspiring poet\" on Poe \"classic literature\", but rather according to the dictates of a reappropriation and reinterpretation of rock entertainer.

Only in this way \'becomes fully appreciated the progression of songs, from rock almost godsend who speaks of Poe as an old friend (Edgar Allan Poe) to the comedy that makes the pair (Broadway Song, sung by actor Steve Buscemi), to the ballad with heart in hand of Who Am I. Through the double thread which associates each piece a character of Poe: a literary game that allows the singer to talk much at first hand how to transform itself from time to time in Ligeia, Tripitena, Rowena.

At the end of this game of mirrors, which overwhelms the input musical and literary, is also the voice of Reed. Enhanced with an accompanying from turning so \'imaginative (for his fees), and stimulated by a material in a certain sense, belongs to the culture \"high\", the voice and\' the protagonist of The Raven.

Capacity \'Reed to deliver a text to the listener through a condition that has nothing of the hand has to be guaranteed a place in the history of the untouchable rock. With Reed and speech \'becomes as noble song, the minimum modulation of voice become melodious palettes from infinite\' possibility \', and the singer gets more rock\' narrator and less URLatore.

The Raven Reed has a great shape in a vowel, and ends up being a self successful singer of this immense, even before a musical and poetic experiment.
