Guido Orefice (Roberto Benigni), un giovanotto ebreo pieno di allegria, si reca ad Arezzo con l\'amico Ferruccio. Durante il movimentato viaggio Guido incontra una maestrina, Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), che chiama da subito principessa poiché lui si spaccia per principe. Arrivato in città, si reca a casa dello zio Eliseo, maître dell\'hotel più rinomato della città: Guido è infatti deciso a diventare un cameriere sebbene il suo progetto sia quello di aprire in seguito una libreria. Quello stesso giorno, in municipio, avviene lo scontro con Rodolfo, un arrogante gerarca fascista, in seguito al quale ciascuno dei due soprannomina l\'altro lo scemo delle uova (Guido sbadatamente mette le uova nel cappello del gerarca, e quando questo lo indossa le uova gli si rompono sulla testa).<br /> Un giorno Guido incontra di nuovo Dora e scopre che è fidanzata con Rodolfo. Nel frattempo, Guido all\'hotel fa amicizia con un medico tedesco con una fissazione per gli indovinelli. Il giorno dopo, nella speranza di riincontrare Dora, Guido, si spaccia per ispettore scolastico e \"dimostra\" la superiorità della razza ariana. Una sera Dora, con i suoi amici, va a teatro, ovviamente Guido la segue e, con uno stratagemma, la \"soffia\" a Rodolfo. I due quella sera parlano a lungo e Guido le confessa infine il proprio amore per lei.<br /> Una sera, proprio al Grand Hotel, Rodolfo festeggia il suo fidanzamento ufficiale con Dora, restia e non troppo convinta del passo. Nel corso della serata Dora si rende conto di quanto sia più attratta da Guido, e al termine della serata, sale sul cavallo che Guido fa entrare nell\'hotel e si lascia \"rapire\". Guido e Dora si sposano e dal loro amore nasce Giosuè (Giorgio Cantarini).<br /> Sei anni dopo la famiglia è ancora felice, Guido ha finalmente aperto la sua libreria, ma proprio il giorno del compleanno di Giosuè,il piccolo, Guido e lo zio vengono deportati in un campo di concentramento assieme agli altri ebrei. Dora, che non è ebrea, li segue volontariamente, incontrando il marito per l\'ultima volta appena arrivati al campo. Pur di proteggere Giosuè dagli orrori della realtà, in una delle scene più geniali del film, Guido si spaccia come interprete del caporale tedesco, e \"traduce\" tutte le regole del lager in un emozionante gioco in cui si dovranno affrontare prove tremende per vincere il meraviglioso premio finale, un carro armato.<br /> Col passare dei giorni Giosuè entra attivamente nel vivo del \"gioco\". Qualche giorno dopo Guido riuscirà a parlare con Dora, per l\'ultima volta, attraverso il microfono del campo.<br /> Durante la visita medica, Guido incontra nuovamente il medico del Grand Hotel che gli offre di lavorare come cameriere ad una cena degli ufficiali tedeschi. Guido accetta credendo che il medico voglia aiutarlo ad evadere dal lager, ma grande sarà la sua delusione quando, quella stessa sera, il dottore lo chiamerà solo per sottoporgli un assurdo indovinello.<br /> Una notte, all\'improvviso, i soldati tedeschi abbandonano freneticamente il campo dopo aver fatto strage dei deportati rimasti. Guido riesce a nascondere Giosuè in una cabina, promettendogli di ritornare, ma mentre è alla ricerca della moglie viene scoperto e fucilato. Le scene finali del film mostrano come al mattino seguente il lager viene liberato. This is a lovely conversion and even displays the subtitles when played on a computer (or divx compatible disc player of course) with Divx player 6.4 installed. The resolution of this conversion is 720 X 384 and shows a lovely picture indeed! Audio is at full 128k bit rate. By the way I am terribly gratified that the Divx versions of The Remains of the day and Sense and Sensibility i released into the bittorrent atmosphere a few weeks ago are going great! We especially have had great seed support with sense and Sensibility. I hope White Mischief will pick up some more soon as it is a lovely movie, abandoned quite clearly by an arrogant movie industry inane in its decision making across the board. La vita e bella (I donated several copies of this DVD to our local library a year ago by the way, along with many copies of Sense and Sensibility at the time too) is a truly important movie as it deals with the limits of escapism in our daily lives. The engagement with reality that is displayed by Benigni's character is always it would seem at odds with the facts as they are told by an honest observer willing to be frank and even brutal with honesty when the circumstances demand.
