the Cuban Missile Crisis fresh in viewers' minds, the Cold War at its frostiest, and the hydrogen bomb relatively new and frightening, Stanley Kubrick dared to make a film about what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button -- and played the situation for laughs. Dr. Strangelove's jet-black satire (from a script by director Stanley Kubrick, Peter George, and Terry Southern) and a host of superb comic performances (including three from Peter Sellers) have kept the film fresh and entertaining, even as its issues have become (slightly) less timely. Loaded with thermonuclear weapons, a U.S. bomber piloted by Maj. T.J. "King" Kong (Slim Pickens) is on a routine flight pattern near the Soviet Union when they receive orders to commence Wing Attack Plan R, best summarized by Maj. Kong as "Nuclear combat! Toe to toe with the Russkies!" On the ground at Burpleson Air Force Base, Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake (Peter Sellers) notices nothing on the news about America being at war. Gen. Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) calmly informs him that he gave the command to attack the Soviet Union because it was high time someone did something about fluoridation, which is sapping Americans' bodily fluids (and apparently has something to do with Ripper's sexual dysfunction). Meanwhile, President Merkin Muffley (Sellers again) meets with his top Pentagon advisors, including super-hawk Gen. Buck Turgidson (George C. Scott), who sees this as an opportunity to do something about Communism in general and Russians in particular. However, the ante is upped considerably when Soviet ambassador DeSadesky (Peter Bull) informs Muffley and his staff of the latest innovation in Soviet weapons technology: a "Doomsday Machine" which will destroy the entire world if the Russians are attacked. # SPECIAL FEATURES # &#915;Çó Inside the Making of Dr. Strangelove (46 minutes) - In this documentary among other things it demonstrated that Kubrick was no easy man to work with. He knew what he wanted and he wanted it when he wanted it! It also showed the incredible genius of set designer Ken Adams. One of the integral elements of the story deals with a B-52 bomber and it's interior. Given the sensitive nature of the bomber, the Air Force refused to assist Adams and his crew of designers in their assessment of the planes' interior. However where there's a will there's a way. In doing his research, Adams came upon a novel that described in perfect detail the interior of the bomber. So complete was the description that the FBI became involved in an attempt to determine the source of material for Adams' set design! Lucky for him, it was all above board! Additionally, the story is conveyed about Peter Sellers playing four (4) roles in the film as opposed to the three (3) that currently exist as well as the "pie fight scene" for the ending of the film that exists only in B&W stills of the event. In all, this documentary was exhaustive in its presentation and thoroughly covered all aspects of the film's genesis and final appearance. Files included: Fear & Desire (1953) Kubrick's first feature was self-financed with $17,000 loaned from his uncle. SK later bought and destroyed almost every print of the film. His attempts to suppress the work were not entirely successful, with reportedly two remaining prints currently held at the George Eastman House in Rochester New York. Status: Not legally available. The Seafarers (1953) - Day Of The Fight (1951) - Flying Padre (1951) Kubrick's early documentaries. The Seafarers was announced as an upcoming release on an official DVD but never materialised. None of these shorts have ever been officially released. Status: Not legally available. The Shining - Original Soundtrack (1980) The soundtrack, with its notable synthesiser score by Wendy/Walter Carlos was issued on a small run pressing but later recalled due to copyright issues. Status: Not legally available. Interview with Stanley Kubrick by Jeremy Bernstein (1966) This lengthy audio interview surfaced as an extra to the book, The Stanley Kubrick Archives. Status: Available only when purchased with other material. Napoleon screenplay and production notes (1969) This famous lost project was due to star Jack Nicholson as the Emperor of France.
