In the Court of the Crimson King (an observation by King Crimson) is the 1969 debut album by the British progressive rock group King Crimson. The album reached No.3 on the British charts. The album was remastered and re-released in the late 1990s, and given a subsequent remastering after the original masters were found in the Virgin vaults, which in turn was released in 2004. The album is certified gold in the United States.

The album is considered by many the launching point of progressive rock where blues-oriented rock is completely abandoned in favour of more jazz and European symphonic elements incorporated. The Who\'s Pete Townshend was quoted as calling the album \"an uncanny masterpiece\".

In the Court of the Crimson King (Island Records, 1969) è il primo album dei King Crimson, gruppo di rock progressivo britannico.

Nell\'album si sente l\'influsso dei Moody Blues di Nights in White Satin (specie nella suggestiva ballata Epitaph), ma il gruppo batte anche vie del tutto proprie e originali, come nel brano di apertura, 21st Century Schizoid Man; racconta Robert Fripp che essa veniva eseguita come pezzo d\'apertura nei concerti, scioccando spesso il pubblico composto di miti hippie che s\'aspettavano le romantiche ballate del gruppo. 21st Century Schizoid Man potrebbe sembrare quasi fuori posto, perché aggredisce con sincopi sinfoniche e uno slogan distorto per lanciarsi poi in una jam furibonda (con un suggestivo delirio di chitarra e fiondate feroci di sax). Spesso gli appassionati dei King Crimson cominciavano ad ascoltare l\'LP posando la puntina del giradischi nello spazio tra 21st Century... e I Talk to the Wind. Eppure la furia iconoclasta di quel primo brano riemergerà pressoché intatta nella seconda fase dei KC, quella che s\'apre con Larks\' Tongues in Aspic; e proprio 21st Century... venne spesso eseguito dal vivo anche dalle recenti incarnazioni dei King Crimson.

Rappresenta pienamente lo spirito del gruppo in questa fase la visione/allucinazione di In the Court of the Crimson King, una suite-balletto che fonde folk medievale, song rinascimentale, jazz-rock, musica psichedelica e sinfonismo classico. Ma in tutta la musica dei King Crimson di questo primo periodo c\'è un miracoloso equilibrio di melodie pop, arrangiamenti jazzistici, armonie classiche, visionarietà psichedeliche. La sintesi quasi alchemica di musica classica, jazz e rock, viene raggiunta attraverso le esperienze dei componenti del gruppo; si può dire che le tre componenti siano rappresentate dai tre strumenti guida: mellotron, sassofono e chitarra. Il fatto saliente stava nell\'essere riusciti a fondere tradizioni così diverse. Semmai la tecnica del gruppo risaltava nel cromatismo quasi delirante delle composizioni, in cui gli strumenti sembrano fare a gara a decorare con tinte sempre più forti.

Il chitarrismo calligrafico di Robert Fripp si accoppiava magnificamente alle ventate elettroniche di Ian McDonald, all\'accompagnamento leggiadro di Greg Lake, al passo marziale di Giles. Vera introduzione all\'universo fiabesco del gruppo è però I Talk to the Wind, tenue ballata accompagnata da riverberi di oboe e vibrafono. Il primo grande capolavoro sinfonico è Epitaph, che si apre con una maestosa marea di mellotron per ridursi subito a un bisbiglio marziale e malinconico; nell\'incedere solenne, classicheggiante, di questo spiritual, nel suo crescendo apocalittico e nell\'arrangiamento certosino di ogni sequenza è riconoscibile il marchio di fabbrica dei King Crimson.

Una minuziosa architettura timbrico-ritmica, eretta cellula sonora su cellula sonora, sosteneva le loro delicate melodie folk. Il capolavoro nel capolavoro era in realtà Moonchild, una lunga suite che era anche il brano meno lineare. Qui le atmosfere gotiche degli altri brani vengono ambientate in uno scenario futuristico: il ritornello dimesso e androide affonda in una palude di suoni dissonanti e di rumori percussivi.

Die Stücke des Debütalbums von King Crimson wurden während der Proben seit der Gründung der Band im November 1968 erarbeitet und bereits vor seiner Veröffentlichung mehrfach live gespielt. I talk to the Wind war dabei der einzige Song, der von Robert Fripps und Michael Giles\' Vorgängerband Giles, Giles & Fripp übernommen wurde. An der Entstehung der anderen Songs waren meist sämtliche Bandmitglieder beteiligt. So stammte das Einstiegsriff zu 21st Century Schizoid Man von Greg Lake, die Erweiterung um die chromatische Tonfolge F, F# und G von Ian McDonald, das Riff am Beginn des instrumentalen Mittelteils geht auf eine Idee Fripps zurück und Michael Giles ist für den Unisonoteil verantwortlich. Der Text wurde von Peter Sinfield verfasst.

Die erste Bandprobe fand am 13. Januar 1969 im Keller des Fulham Palace Cafés in London statt. Ende Januar entschieden sich David Enthoven und John Gaydon, als Manager für die Band zu arbeiten und brachten den Moody Blues-Produzenten Tony Clark von der Plattenfirma Decca dazu, sich die Band anzuhören. Dieser sagte zu, mit King Crimson ein Album aufzunehmen. Am 1. Mai 1969 besuchte die Band die Londoner Morgan Studios, in denen die Arbeiten am Debütalbum stattfinden sollten, um sich ein Bild zu machen. Doch die Aufnahmen konnten aufgrund zahlreicher Konzertverpflichtungen erst im Juni beginnen.

Am 12. Juni begannen die Aufnahmesessions mit 21st Century Schizoid Man. Die Backing Tracks entstanden noch an diesem Tag, am nächsten Tag nahm McDonald sein Solo auf. Am 14. Juni arbeitete man an I Talk To The Wind, in den nächsten Tagen an Epitaph. Doch die Sessions wurden schon am 19. Juni abgebrochen. Die Band war unzufrieden mit der Richtung, in die Tony Clark gehen wollte.

Nach einer Unterbrechung von drei Wochen unternahm man einen letzten Versuch mit Clark und nahm man die Arbeiten am 7. Juli wieder auf. Vier Tage lang konzentrierte sich die Band auf Epitaph. Doch erneut wurden die Sessions abgebrochen: Tony Clark hatte versucht, King Crimson den Moody-Blues-Sound zu verpassen, der sich zuvor bereits als sehr erfolgreich erwiesen hatte. Doch die Band wollte ihren eigenen Sound entwickeln. Sie trennte sich daraufhin von Clark und Decca.

Enthoven und Gaydon mussten in der Folge die Band selbst finanzieren, konnten jedoch bald einen Vertrag mit Island Records abschließen. Daraufhin wurden die Arbeiten in den Wessex Studios wieder aufgenommen.

Ab 21. Juli wurde The Court Of The Crimson King fertiggestellt. In den darauffolgenden Tagen nahm man das Mellotron und den Gesang auf. Am 29. Juli nahm sich die Band I talk to the Wind vor, einen Tag später wandte man sich Epitaph zu. 21st Century Schizoid Man wurde vom ersten bis zum vierten August 1969 aufgenommen. Die Arbeiten daran wurden mit Fripps und McDonalds\' Soli abgeschlossen. Am 31. August wurden die Backing-Tracks für Moonchild aufgenommen. Aufgrund des Mangels an Songmaterial beschloss man, die kurze Ballade durch eine Improvisation (damals ohnehin bereits ein wichtiger Teil von King-Crimson-Konzerten) auszubauen. Die Songs Get thy Bearings (die Coverversion eines Donovan-Songs), Travel weary Capricorn, Drop in und Mars, die damals auf Konzerten gespielt wurden, wollte die Band nicht mit auf das Album nehmen, weil man keine Coverversion auf dem Debüt haben wollte.

Die Aufnahmen waren Ende August abgeschlossen.

In The Court Of The Crimson King es el primer álbum publicado por el grupo King Crimson en el año 1969. Es usualmente considerado el primer álbum de rock progresivo.

Este álbum se destaca por la combinación de las letras y la instrumentación (con importante influencia de jazz y música clásica). Si bien otros artistas habían fusionado a estos géneros con el rock, el debut de King Crimson tuvo una atmósfera mucho más oscura y reflexiva (en gran parte gracias a las ideas de Peter Sinfield, quien escribió las letras). Además, es uno de los primeros álbumes que se destacan por sus largas canciones (algunos con partes con nombre propio, con muchas improvisaciones y muy complejas), su concepto y su arte de tapa (diseñada por Barry Godber).

El álbum comienza con \"21st Century Schizoid Man\", una abrasiva mezcla de hard rock y jazz, pero a partir de la siguiente canción (\"I Talk To The Wind\", que había sido escrita con anterioridad, cuando aún existía GIles, GIles & Fripp) la atmósfera cambia. Se destaca el trabajo de Ian McDonald, el principal compositor, quien además toca el melotrón y la flauta, elementos importantes en el sonido de este disco. La canción más controversial es \"Moonchild\", que comienza como una canción similar a las que la rodean, pero luego se convierte en una improvisación con influencias de jazz de casi 10 minutos.

Esta formación se disolvería muy pronto y la banda pasaría a ser controlada por el guitarrista Robert Fripp. El siguiente álbum, \"In the Wake of Poseidon\", tuvo un sonido similar. Sin embargo, este álbum fue muy influyente en la emergente escena del rock progresivo y en el art rock.

Pour compléter le tout, les 1000 cm² de la couverture de l\'album vinyl sont tout emplis d\'un tableau en gros plan d\'un visage aux yeux écarquillés, apeuré et criant, dont on voit nettement la luette, le tout dans des tons rouge tirant vers le bleu. L\'image est sensée représenter le Schizoid Man de la chanson. Dans les rayons lors de sa sortie, la pochette attire l\'attention, intrigue et incite à l\'achat. La qualité de l\'album et son visuel propulse à la cinquième place des Charts, ce qui pour un premier album est remarquable.
