This CD is typical of what we have come to expect from Johnny Winter-a great selection of (mainly 12-bar blues) songs; strong, gritty vocals, and smoking hot guitar.

Johnny is equally skilled at slide and non-slide playing. In fact, there aren\'t many people who can match him on the slide guitar. Listen to \"Serious as a Heart Attack,\" and you\'ll hear what I mean.

Other than \"Just Like a Woman,\" the songs are mostly in the traditional urban blues form, but played with a hard edge. These tracks are very close to what Johnny did on his trendsetting \"Progressive Blues Experiment\" LP back in the late \'60s. It\'s Chicago blues spiced with a dose of rock and roll.

Like any life-changing, chromosome-rearranging event, all guitar fans remember their
first time seeing Johnny Winter perform live. For me, the year was 1973, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Johnny was then embarking on his Still Alive and Well comeback tour. Appearing onstage all in white, his platinum-white hair flowing down to his elbows and playing a blinding white Gibson Firebird V, Johnny beamed with the unbridled energy of a force from some distant galaxy. His performance a combination of earth-shattering guitar playing, searing vocals and wildly energetic stage presence--was nothing short of brilliant. He rocked the Garden so hard that night, the entire building shook in rhythm with the music. During the barn-burning boogie track Rock & Roll, I literally believed that the Garden was going to blast apart at the seams.

In the ensuing years, I have seen Johnny perform countless times in arenas, amphitheaters, 1200-seaters, sardine-canned packed clubs (such as NYC s legendary Lone Star Café), rehearsal studios, and even Johnny s own living room. Seeing and hearing Johnny Winter play live is an experience like no other, because, simply stated, no other guitar player has ever entwined raw power, pure emotion, conviction, and virtuosity more effectively than he has.

Live Bootleg Series: Vol. 3 opens with Mojo Boogie. Johnny leads off the tune with some unaccompanied virtuoso slide work, his guitar tuned to open D (one of his favorite tunings for slide), before the band kicks in for a blazing extended intro solo, with bassist Paris offering some double duty by coping Johnny s slide melodies note-for-note on harmonica.

The second cut, Stranger Blues, is a killer Elmore James boogaloo that Johnny rips apart with more slide work in open D. This is the type of hard-rockin blues Johnny first introduced to the world back in 1969 with his seminal release, The Progressive Blues Experiment.

On the third track, I Smell Trouble Johnny displays the kind of mind-blowing speed and virtuosity that he usually reserves for long workouts over slow blues, while Boot Hill is a hard-driving mid-tempo shuffle on which Johnny effortlessly combines slide guitar with some of the fastest single-note work he s ever recorded.

Next up is a very rare live take of Robert Johnson s Stones in My Pass Way, played in front of a small but appreciative audience. Johnny performs the song unaccompanied with a slide on a National steel guitar tuned to open G. I learned about open tunings from listening to Robert Johnson\'s King of the Delta Blues, Johnny told me back in 1989. I picked up the concept of using open tunings just by using my own ears, and when I discovered how the open tunings worked with the slide, it was quite a revelation.

I m Gonna Murder My Baby, was written by one of Johnny s big guitar influences, Pat Hare. Says Johnny, I m Gonna Murder My Baby is the heaviest blues song ever written!

This collection rounds out with a smoldering version of Johnny s most well known track, his slide guitar tour-de-force arrangement of Bob Dylan s Highway 61 Revisited. Johnny Winter is regarded as one of the greatest, most original and most influential slide guitarists ever, and this track offers ample testament to that fact.

Today, Johnny Winter is still touring steadily all over the globe, playing and singing as only he can and bringing audiences to their feet wherever he goes. Until the next time you get to see him perform live, Live Bootleg Vol. 3 will keep you covered.

Live Bootleg Series Vol. 2 features Winter\'s take on songs by legends like B.B. King, Mose Allison, Jimi Hendrix, and Robert Johnson as well as a song by obscure bluesman Willie Brown, and a lone Winter original. Winter\'s performances here are reckless, rockin\', and a heck of a lot of fun. Winter\'s own \"Black Cat Bone,\" for instance, is a Chicago-style rave-up with dancing fretwork and a steady shuffling beat, complimented by Paris\' solid harp playing. Paris and Bobby T add a wide, loping groove to Allison\'s \"Parchman Farm,\" Johnny laying his excited leads atop the rhythm.

The classic B.B. King song \"Rock Me Baby\" features Winter\'s bluesy Texas drawl belting out the lyrics, supported by some frenetic riffing and booming drumbeats. It\'s the obscure Willie Brown cover, \"Mississippi Blues,\" that acts as the centerpiece of Live Bootleg Series Vol. 2, however. With Paris blastin\' away at the harp, Winter uses every inch of the 15-minute performance to paint a complex portrait of the blues, combining his passionate vocals with a variety of single-note leads, incredible slidework, and tough riffs. Robert Johnson\'s \"Crossroads\" is guitar-driven romp across the Delta, while Hendrix\'s \"Red House\" is the perfect showcase for Winter\'s explosive guitar technique.

The Reverend\'s Bottom Line

Although Live Bootleg Series Vol. 2 only features six songs, all of \'em are real barn-burners, and only one clocks in at less than seven-minutes-plus, leaving plenty of time for Winter\'s extended slide-guitar jams. The album lives up to its \"bootleg\" status with less-than-pristine sound quality ... OK, so most songs sound like they\'re being played in a tin can ... and the album itself offers little or no information on the performances included, such as date or venue. Minor notes, to be sure, \'cause the music is what matters. Fans of guitar blues and blues-rock certainly won\'t be disappointed ... just turn up the volume and let Johnny Winter rock the house!

The CD is 100% Johnny Winter legit and I hope he makes a bundle off it and keeps on with series.

This CD is incredible!!! First off this appears to be a complete live session plus the added cut \"It\'s All Over Now\". I am guessing based on the song set and Johnny\'s backup musicians this is a late 70\'s recording. This CD smokes. \"Johnny B. Goode\" has a few uneven bits but after that the band tightens up, they get in sync with Johnny and then it\'s a Johnny Winter show from then on out. At this point in Johnny\'s career he is a several years out of his rock n roll superstar era (as I call it) but still heavily influenced by it and it shows on this CD. It is rockin\' high energy from start to finish. Johnny\'s playing is amazing (of course) and in many spots hits the, \"what did he just do\" incredible level. Most of the cuts are well over six minutes and what is really cool is Johnny and the band go into several \"jam sessions\" (trading off leads with the bass and drums) which are not usually found on Johnny\'s live stuff. \"Messin\' With the Kid\" is excellent and, yes, Johnny plays that amazing rhythm section live that is on his studio version of the tune. \"Rollin and Tumblin\" has not been one of my favorite tunes by Johnny, however, this live version is by far my favorite. Every tune is excellent and a true stand out. The sound quality is quite good, so don\'t let the \"Bootleg\" in the title scare you.

If you like Johnny rockin\' hard, rockin\' the blues, and his blazing guitar licks, some at breakneck speeds, by this CD, you will not be disappointed.

John Dawson "Johnny" Winter III (born on 23 February 1944 in Beaumont, Texas, USA) is an American blues guitarist, singer and producer. In 1968, Winter began playing in a trio with bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Uncle John Turner. An article in Rolling Stone magazine written by Larry Sepulvado helped generate interest in the group. The album Johnny Winter was released near the end of that year. In 1969 they performed at numerous rock festivals including Woodstock.In 1973, after recovering from a drug abuse, he returned to the music scene in classic form with Still Alive and Well, a song written by Rick Derringer saluting Winter for overcoming his addiction. In 1977, he produced the Muddy Waters album Hard Again, and in 1980, Muddy's final effort, King Bee. Their partnership produced a number of Grammy-winning recordings throughout, and he recorded the album Nothing but the Blues with members from Muddy Waters' band. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame.

This is one of the all-time great blues-rock albums. For guitar fans, tone freaks, blues hounds and rock & roll animals! Awesome version of Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited” and the last track “Sweet Papa John” is killer! Highly recommended!!!
