As Dimitri is retiring and returning home to Europe, he is looking to unload Major. Napoleon is more than glad to take in the tame circus lion, and with Grandpa's approval, Major's new home is a cage with the family's chickens. Napoleon and Samantha are best friends. This is Dimitri, the clown that fate introduces to Napoleon and his grandfather one night. Napoleon quickly takes a liking to Major, and along with his grandfather, oversees Major and his milk-only diet (the result of bad teeth). But more is about to change for the boy: his Grandpa is dying. While very sick, Grandpa sends a letter to Napoleon's last living relative, an uncle from New York that he's never seen. Before he can get a response, though, Napoleon's grandfather dies. Meanwhile, back at home, Samantha's housekeeper Gertrude (Ellen Corby) is worried about her, and she alerts the authorities to check out Napoleon and the 'hippie' she last saw him with. These same authorities find the secret burial spot of Napoleon's grandfather and begin to investigate. As the children's journey subsides, a few misunderstandings lead to a misguided police hunt. Napoleon, Samantha, and Major set out on an incredible journey to Danny's. He's no James MacArthur! Napoleon and Samantha changes gears a few times. It starts out as an intimate small town coming-of-age tale, develops into a grand expedition in the wild, and then finishes with a quick-paced, action-packed climax. However, this refreshingly only leaves surprises ahead for the viewer. Through it all, the film remains entertaining and most interesting. The hybrid of subjects and tones works incredibly well, as the story stays fresh and highly watchable. The young leads are compelling, and Michael Douglas' top-billed college student is a good role and makes for a highlighting performance. Enjoy The film is based on a novel by Mary Rodgers, in which mother and daughter switch bodies and get a taste of each others' lives. The cause of the switch is left unexplained in this film, but occurs when Mrs. Andrews and Annabel, in two different places, say about each other at the same time "I wish I could switch places with her for just one day." Rogers adds a waterskiing subplot to her screenplay. The cast includes John Astin, Ruth Buzzi, Dick Van Patten, and Charlene Tilton. Neither Barbara Harris nor Jodie Foster did any actual waterskiing in the film. In both cases, these scenes were achieved with the use of professional waterskiiers in long shot on location, and cutaway shots of the actresses in front of a green-screen projection. PLOT- Con-artist, Harry Bundage discovers that there is a great treasure located somewhere around the residence where Lady St. Edmund lives - the estate of "Candleshoe". Harry recruits American Jodie Foster, who until then was a street kid, into the plot employing her to pose as Lady St. Edmund's estranged granddaughter. Lady St. Edmund, however, is poor and owes money in back taxes to the government. Priory, her butler (who is forced to pose as a gardener and gentleman Colonel), as well as some local orphan children, help keep the estate finances one step ahead of the government by selling produce made on the estate. All of this happens under the nose of Lady St. Edmund. Initially Casey enters the con attempting to find the location of the treasure but, over time, her affections turn towards that of the household and Lady St. Edmund. She eventually joins them in attempting to undercover Lady St. Edmund's treasure for the benefit of Candleshoe and not Bundage. The four clues revealed in the hunt for the treasure are: * For the sunrise student there is treasure among books. * The paths of glory lead but to the grave. (A reference to the poem "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" by Thomas Gray.) * He followed the eclipse for riches and fame, and if ye would prosper, do ye the same. * Underfoot, in the great hall.
