Rimasto vittima di una devastante malattia che ne ha segnato l\'infanzia, crescendo è diventato un abile dottore, probabilmente il miglior chirurgo al mondo, in grado di eseguire con mano ferma e nervi d\'acciaio interventi all\'apparenza impossibili. Tuttavia Black Jack non ha la licenza per esercitare (e nemmeno gli interessa acquisirla) ed è quindi costretto ad operare sempre con discrezione, costantemente braccato dalla polizia. E\' famoso anche per le cifre astronomiche che chiede quando accetta di occuparsi di un paziente, e i casi che tratta sono sempre ai limiti dell\'incredibile.<br /> Nonostante quest\'apparenza di persona fredda ed avida, in realtà Black Jack ha sempre a cuore la sorte dei propri pazienti e non si tira mai indietro, anche quando questi non hanno i mezzi per pagare il suo astronomico onorario. A fargli da assistente troviamo la piccola Pinoko, in apparenza una bambina di cinque anni più sveglia della media, ma in realtà una ragazza costretta in un corpo artificiale, uno dei tanti casi limite cui il cupo dottore si è dovuto occupare...<br /> <br /> Black Jack è un vero e proprio \"medical thriller\", con il protagonista alle prese in ogni episodio con malattie sconosciute e quasi sempre dagli effetti grotteschi e dal decorso drammatico. La sfida non è tra il protagonista ed un classico \"cattivo\", ma tra il dottore ed un non meglio identificato male, che deve essere debellato prima che riesca ad uccidere il paziente che ha colpito: un\'impresa che non sempre riesce, nemmeno ad un luminare come Black Jack.<br /> Oltre ad un\'atmosfera unica, cupa e drammatica, questa serie di Ova può contare anche su una direzione particolarmente ispirata e su animazioni sempre molto valide, che prendono ispirazione dal tratto originale di Tezuka, adattandolo al contesto oscuro e adulto delle vicende.
