The plot

Anthony Stark è un inventore geniale e miliardario col vizio delle donne (tante) e delle attività filantropiche. Ereditato patrimonio e ingegno dal padre scomparso in un incidente d\'auto, Tony (per amici e amichette) conduce e amministra le Industrie Stark, produttrici e prime fornitrici di armi per il governo americano. Durante un test in medioriente, per verificare l\'efficienza di un\'arma sperimentale, viene catturato da un gruppo di estremisti. Ferito al cuore da una scheggia è soccorso e curato da Yinsen, un fisico esperto di cibernetica che gli applica un organo artificiale. Obbligato dai guerriglieri a costruire un\'arma invincibile per la loro causa, Tony progetta in segreto un\'armatura per fuggire alla prigionia. Rientrato negli Stati Uniti è deciso a cambiare vita, a riparare alle ingiustizie e a \"industriarsi\" a favore dei più deboli. The playboy wolf and genius Tony Stark is the successful CIO of the Stark Industries, a weapon company founded by his father. His second in command is Obadiah Stane, who worked with his father, and his loyal and professional secretary is Pepper Potts, who has a crush on Tony. While in Afghanistan to demonstrate the ultimate Jericho missile developed by his company, his military convoy is attacked and Tony is seriously wounded on his chest and kidnapped by a group of rebels that wants him to assemble a missile for their use. Tony stays with his abductors for three months and develops a powerful metallic armor to escape from the cave where he is arrested. He decides to stop manufacturing weapons in his company under the protest of Obadiah, and dedicates his time to improve the armor, manufacturing it with gold and titanium and installing a propulsion system to fly. However, Pepper discovers that Tony was betrayed by Obadiah, who is using Tony\'s data to build prototype armor for him, transforming it in the ultimate weapon.

- Trama -

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), geniale inventore e direttore generale delle Industrie Stark, prime fornitrici di armi del governo americano, viene preso in ostaggio da un gruppo di rivoltosi. Ferito da una letale granata che lo colpisce vicino al cuore già un pò malandato, Tony riceve l\'ordine di costruire una potente arma distruttrice per Raza (Faran Tahir), il misterioso leader dei ribelli. Tony, invece, usa il suo intelletto e la sua ingegnosità per costruire un\'armatura che lo tiene in vita e che gli permette di scappare dalla prigionia. Dopo il suo ritorno in America, Tony deve fare i conti con il suo passato e giura di portare le Industrie Stark in una nuova direzione, ma trova la resistenza di Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges), suo braccio destro e top executive, che ha preso il controllo della società durante la sua assenza; Tony passa giorni e notti nel suo laboratorio sviluppando e perfezionando un\'armatura di avanzata tecnologia che lo protegge fisicamente e gli da una forza sovrumana. Con l\'aiuto della sua assistente di lunga data Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) e del suo fidato aggangio militare Rhodey (Terrence Howard), Tony scopre un complotto che ha implicazioni globali. Con addosso la sua nuova potente armatura rossa e oro, Tony giura di proteggere il mondo e di riparare alle sue ingiustizie nei panni del suo nuovo alter-ego, Iron Man.

All’elenco dei supereroi sbarcati sul grande schermo mancava l’uomo di ferro, che in realtà di ferro non è come ben ripete il suo alter ego Tony Starks \"si tratta di una lega di oro e titanio\", ma che comunque sia, dal 1963, (ovvero da quando apparve per la prima volta a fumetti) si fa chiamare Iron man. Si tratta del primo film prodotto direttamente dalla Marvel, che dopo aver tante volte venduto i diritti alla Sony (leggasi ad esempio Spiderman e Ghost Raider ), alla Fox (X-men), Warner Bros (Blade) e alle altre majors hollywoodiane, ha deciso di fare da sé alleandosi con la Paramount.
Per l’occasione ha scelto un regista, ex attore, che ben se la cava con effetti speciali e ritmo da commedia (Jon Favreau, già autore di \"Elf\" e \"Zathura\") e un attore che più stravagante e stralunato non si poteva: Robert Downey Junior. Chiaro che l’idea di un uomo tutto armi, in quest’epoca di guerre e tragedie, rischiava di disamorare in partenza quel pubblico che già non fosse amante del personaggio attraverso i comics. La scelta ricaduta su questo interprete così diverso dai soliti canoni capace di far sorridere anche ad un solo sguardo va letta in tal senso: il solo apparire di Robert Downey Junior sul grande schermo trasmette (e in questo film ce n’è un’ulteriore conferma) voglia di disimpegno e di non prendersi troppo sul serio.
Il prologo sembra pescare a piene mani dall’attualità: Asia centrale, terroristi nascosti tra le montagne e truppe americane a presidio e perlustrazione della zona. Rispetto al fumetto originale non ci sono Wing Hu e i suoi vietnamiti, ma Raza e un gruppo di militi che dovrebbero (ma nessuno lo specifica) essere estremisti islamici.
Insomma, c’è un’attualizzazione del personaggio che lascerebbe pensare ad un radicamento della storia, che di lì in avanti andrà a svilupparsi, con la quotidianità, ma così non è. Il film prende presto la strada del più leggero (e forse redditizio in termini di intrattenimento) racconto del supereroe che lotta contro un cattivo affamato di potere. Non che sia un male, ogni film ha una sua struttura e degli obiettivi propri, ma quel pizzico di pessimismo che ultimamente si manifestava anche in tutte le fracassone produzioni hollywoodiane (vedasi ad esempio la New York sotto assedio dei Transformers o la cupissima Gotham City di Batman begins, che rumors dYears ancora più violenta nel sequel) è qui sostanzialmente messo da parte, per far spazio al processo d’avvicinamento al bene percorso dal suo protagonista. E’ infatti negli scrupoli di coscienza di Tony Starks, da produttore di armi a filantropo, che risiede l’aspetto drammaturgico di questa pellicola spettacolare, divertente e ben narrata, ma non ansiosa di andare un pò più in là.
Il regista Favreau se la cava bene nella narrazione, enfatizza il giusto i classici momenti topici (la prima apparizione dell’armatura, lo scontro aereo con i jet e il confronto finale), senza perdere di vista l’umanità dei personaggi aiutato da un ottimo cast di attori.
Robert Downey Junior trova un degno contraltare nell’ex Lebowsky (e irriconoscibile) Jeff Bridges. Gwyneth Paltrow ha la giusta carica di femminilità (il poco cinema fatto negli ultimi anni sembra averla ringiovanita) per coprire il ruolo della bella partner di turno.
Da notare poi il solito (c’è sempre nei film su personaggi Marvel) cameo di Stan Lee, padre della Marvel e coautore del personaggio: è Hugh Hefner, il patron di Playboy. O almeno è così che lo confonde Tony Starks sul red carpet di una festa di gala.
