Eliza Dushku interpreta una giovane donna di nome Echo, membro di un gruppo di persone conosciute come \"Attivi\" o \"Bambole\". Le Bambole sono persone cui la vita e le esperienze vissute nel mondo vengono totalmente cancellate per essere impresse con un \"tot\" di altre personalità. Il nuovo individuo è un amalgama di personalità differenti, prese da persone esistenti ed il risultato comprende sia i \"punti di forza\" che i \"punti deboli\" delle varie personalità. Gli Attivi sono poi inviati a compiere differenti compiti (persino dei crimini, fantasie erotiche dei clienti e altro ancora), sotto il costante controllo dai \"Guardiani\". Tra un incarico e l\'altro, agli Actives viene svuotata la mente, essi si trovano perciò in uno stato infantile, senza ricordi di alcun tipo, e vivono in un futuristico laboratorio/dormitorio, chiamato Dollhouse (casa delle bambole). I nomi delle Bambole corrispondono tutti a una lettera dell\'alfabeto fonetico NATO (ad esempio Echo sta per E, Sierra per S e così via).
La storia parla di Echo, che incomincia gradualmente a diventare cosciente del suo stato di Attiva.
