The film received a lot of controversy over it's graphic violence with disturbing imagery and scenarios. That's why, in 2009, the film was redone with slight changes to be made into a Comedy. Now, for the first time, Martyrs (one of the more disturbing of the French New Extreme films) can be seen with a new plot and lightened tone. The original plot revolved around two girls - both entangled together at a young age: one with horrific visions and self destructive, the other a co-dependent and deeply in love with the other. The two eventually get caught up in an unfortunate set of events that spiral into madness. The new plot revolves two girls search for buried treasure as they are spurred along by a mysterious naked pirate. They soon meet up with another band of thieves and soon learn that their search for the treasure is more than meets the eye.
