Utada Hikaru è nata il 19 Gennaio del 1983 a New York. Il suo interesse per la musica è dovuto ai genitori già immersi nell\'arte e nelle melodie: il padre Utada Teruzane è infatti un produttore, mentre la madre, Fuji Keiko, è una cantante Enka (musica tradizionale giapponese).

La sua carriera inizia già quando la ragazza ha 9 nove, prendendo parte al gruppo U3 coi genitori. Nel 1997 pubblica il suo primo album da solista, \'\'Precious\'\', sotto il nome di Cubic U. La realizzazione ha come protagonista diverse melodie, con influenze R&B notevoli.

Dopo quest\'esperienza Hikaru viene portata ad interessarsi maggiormente al pubblico Giapponese, e nel 1998 torna sulla scena musicale con il suo vero nome, pubblicando \'\'Automatic / time will tell\'\' con la Toshiba Emi. Il singolo vende circa 2\'063\'000 copie e da quel momento in poi Hikki verrà premiata ad ogni uscita.

La conferma della sua ascesa avviene grazie a \'\'First Love\'\', il suo primo album: in due settimane soltanto riesce a vendere ben 2 milioni di copie, arrivando a 4 milioni in un mese ed a 8 milioni infine.

Una nota curiosa la troviamo nella scelta della ragazza di non apparire mai nelle televisioni in quel periodo: il suo successo era affermato, ma la si riconosceva solo grazie alla voce ed alle foto delle covers. Nell\'estate del 1999 inizia a fare le sue prime apparizioni, annunciando la partecipazione al programma Hey!Hey!Hey! e Music Station, alzando vertiginosamente gli ascolti.

I concerti, com\'era possibile intuire, sono rari, ed il primo ufficiale è solamente quello del 2000, chiamato Bohemien Summer 2000. I biglietti vengono esauriti in tempi da record: 90 minuti per il primo concerto e 75 per il secondo.

Il 2000 è anche anno di premi: la cantante vince agli 14th Japan Gold Disc Grand Prix gli awards come \'\'Artista dell\'anno\'\', \'\'Canzone dell\'anno\'\' con \'\'Automatic\'\', \'\'Movin’ on without You\'\' e \'\'Addicted To You\'\', \'\'Pop Album of the Year\'\' con \'\'First Love\'\' e \'\'Music Video of the Year\'\' con il \'\'Single Clip Collection Vol.1\'\'. Agli MTV Music Awards 2000 vince invece il premio come \'\'Best-selling Japanese Artist\'\'.

Hikaru continua a produrre musica, e nel 2001 diviene la prima artista a registrare un MTV Unplugged, organizzato al Tokyo Tennoz Studio.
Nel gennaio 2002 apre la cerimonia del World Economic Forum al Waldorf Astoria di New York, presentandosi con \'\'Fly Me To The Moon\'\' e nel febbraio dello stesso anno ottiene un contratto con la Island DefJam, casa discografica americana.
A maggio appare nell\'album della famosissima Shiina Ringo, nell\'album \'\'UTAITE MYORI –Vol.1 -\'\' con \'\'I won’t last a day without you\'\'.

Nel settembre del 2002 la cantante annuncia il suo matrimonio con Kazuaki Kiriya, regista che si occupa anche dei suoi PV ed arriviamo al 2004 con l\'uscita di \'\'Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro\'\', theme song del film \'\'CASSHERN\'\', diretto dal marito.

Nello stesso anno Hikaru appare nel CD delle Olimpiadi d\'Atene con \'\'By Your Side\'\', collaborazione con Kiley Dean e Timbaland. Lo stesso Timbaland produrrà l\'album \'\'EXODUS\'\', dedicato la pubblico americano sotto il nome di Utada.

Dopo un anno di assenza la cantante torna verso la fine del 2005 con il singolo \'\'Be My Last\'\', seguito da \'\'Passion\'\', theme song di Kingdom Hearts 2, dopo la bella \'\'Hikari\'\' per il primo episodio della saga. Il nuovo album era quindi alle porte, e verso la metà del 2006 viene pubblicato \'\'ULTRA BLUE\'\', considerato da Hikaru stessa il suo miglior album. Nello stesso periodo l\'artista inizia il suo tour, chiamato \'\'UTADA UNITED 2006\'\', il cui DVD viene pubblicato nel Natale del 2006.

Continuando a pubblicare in modo regolare singoli, il 2 Marzo del 2007 la cantante annuncia il suo divorzio, affermando che ormai lei e l\'ex marito si vedevano poco.

[::Recensione::]

Un anno prima dell\'uscita di \'\'First Love\'\', una giovanissima Utada Hikaru si appropriava dello pseudonimo CUBIC U per pubblicare l\'album \'\'Precious U\'\'. Sicuramente è qualcosa di completamente diverso dalle future realizzazioni dell\'artista col suo vero nome. Alcuni aspetti importanti sono per esempio l\'utilizzo esclusivo dell\'inglese, ed una forte, fortissima influena R&B. Le canzoni di \'\'Precious\'\' sono quasi tutte di medio tempo, che ricordano molto le ballate R&B americane.

Anche a quei tempi, Hikaru aveva una voce ferma e potente, che risalta immediatamente in \'\'My Little Lover Boy\'\'. È, come già annunciato, una ballata di medio tempo, che però risalta per la sua orecchiabilità. Nell\'insieme, è qualcosa di molto calmo e dolce.

Le influenze americane si sentono sicuramente in \'\'Lullaby\'\', dove sentiamo un coro quasi gospel. Purtroppo, anche se il ritmo R&B è quasi lo stesso della canzone precedente, \'\'Lullaby\'\' non viene fuori così bene. È carina, ma niente di speciale.
\'\'How Ya Doin\'\' è sicuramente più accattivante. Di nuovo, la voce di Hikaru dimostra una maturità incredibile e semplicemente inaspettata. Le seconde voci femminili rendono il tutto abbastanza particolare, ma dopo qualche ascolto la traccia potrebbe risultare un po\' ripetitiva.
Gudagniamo un\'atmosfera più oscura e malinconica grazie a \'\'I Don\'t Love You\'\'. Risalta sicuramente più delle precedenti tracce, come fece subito \'\'My Little Lover Boy\'\'.
Ritorniamo ancora alle ballate di medio tempo classiche con \'\'Promise\'\', dove sentiamo un piano molto accurato e bello d\'ascoltare. Hikaru sembra piuttosto a suo agio in questo tipo di melodie, ma purtroppo \'\'Promise\'\' sembra un misto di suoni e ritmi troppo confusionario.
Continuamo sullo stesso stile con \'\'Ticket 4 Two\'\', che inizia senza particolari da sottolineare. Purtroppo la traccia rimane piuttosto piatta nel corso dei minuti.
\'\'Take a Little While\'\' si avvale di nuovo delle seconde voci, sempre presenti e concrete nelle canzoni di \'\'Precious\'\'. Ricorda molto \'\'Promise\'\' come canzone, e forse a qualcosa di \'\'My Little Lover Boy\'\'.
\'\'100 Reasons Why\'\' è sicuramente più allegra, ma la musica in sottofondo dopo un po\' diventa piuttosto ripetitiva e noiosa.
Riprendiamo lo stile di \'\'Take a Little While\'\' con \'\'Works Thing Out\'\', che purtroppo non risalta.
In \'\'Close to You\'\' ritroviamo coro e voce maschile, che avevamo già sentito in \'\'Lullaby\'\', ma anche qui non abbiamo niente di particolare.
Andiamo verso la conclusione senza aver trovato ancora niente degno di nota topo \'\'My Little Lover Boy\'\', ed incontriamo \'\'Precious Love\'\', ancora piuttosto ripetitiva e piatta.
Concludiamo con \'\'How Ya Doin\' -Rap Version-\'\', forse una delle tracce più diverse dell\'album, che però non coincide proprio con il prototipo di bellezza.

Forse quello che rende \'\'Precious\'\' poco convincente, è la costante comparazione con le future realizzazioni di Hikaru. Ma anche se ci si dimentica per un attimo della carriera sensazionale dell\'artista, \'\'Precious\'\' è un album troppo piatto e poco innovativo, se non per l\'introduzione id un R&B e di influenze americane che in Giappone, a quei tempi, si sentiva davvero poco.

In 2007, her single "Flavor of Life" reached #2 in worldwide digital download single sales with over 7.2 million downloads, and she totally sold 12 million digital ringtones and songs in that year, making her the first artist ever to have this many digital sales in one year.
