Dronjak had already composed some of the new band???s music, including the song ???Steel Meets Steel???. Several of the band???s early lineups featured members of other influential Swedish heavy metal bands, such as In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. The members intended to take part in a competition known as ???Rockslaget???. In 1996, HammerFall reached the semi-finals of the competition, but needed to find a new vocalist as their existing one would be unavailable for the competition. He was replaced by Joacim Cans, who became a full-time member of the band. Despite not winning the competition, HammerFall???s live demo earned them a contract with Vic Records, which resulted in the release of their debut album ???Glory to the Brave???. The band was also licensed to Nuclear Blast of Germany for a four-album deal. At this point, the decision was taken that HammerFall was a full-time project, which meant that the In Flames members opted to focus on their melodic death metal band. ???Glory to the Brave??? proved a considerable success for the band, paving the way for later successes. This critical and commercial success was further underscored by the success of a tour of Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands, in which the band played to full houses. This pattern would be followed on later tours with other power metal bands. HammerFall capped off 1997 with a nomination for Best Hard Rock Act at the Swedish music awards. In 1998, HammerFall released ???Legacy of Kings???, their second album and their first featuring their entire lineup. Again, the band followed this release with a tour schedule covering much of Europe, as well as a number of major festivals. The first single from ???Legacy of Kings???, ???Heeding The Call???, achieved the success of a three-week stay on the German charts. HammerFall also recorded songs for tribute albums to several of their influences, including Accept and Helloween, before embarking on their first world tour. This tour was marred slightly by most of the band catching a throat infection, which rendered lead singer Cans unable to speak, much less sing. HammerFall???s third album, ???Renegade???, was recorded in much the same fashion as their previous two releases had been. In contrast to the uniformly positive reaction to the first two albums, ???Renegade??? was met by some scepticism in some quarters, however early single releases found just as much success with fans as before, as did the album itself. The band???s fourth album, ???Crimson Thunder???, was recorded partly in Holland (the bass), partly in Germany (the drums) and partly on the island of Tenerife. Once again, the album met with success, with some reviews remarking on the heavier sound when compared with earlier releases. At around this time, Joacim Cans was attacked in a bar, having a beer glass smashed into his face. He made a full recovery, and the planned video shoot for ???Hearts on Fire??? was only postponed by a week. In 2007, bass guitarist Magnus Ros??n decided to leave the band to continue his solo career, and in came an old friend, Fredrik Larsson. Fredrik was playing bass for Hammerfall during the recording of their debut album - Glory To The Brave. (Ilham) Guitarist Stefan Elmgren left the band in the summer of 2008 because he wanted to focus on his career as a commercial pilot. Pontus Norgren from The Poodles replaced him. For a long time he had wanted to play heavier music so this was his chance. Inizialmente, l\'idea era quella di un side-project per non togliere troppo tempo ai progetti principali dei due, rispettivamente i Crystal Age e gli In Flames, con l\'obiettivo di trovarsi qualche volta all\'Years per preparare alcune canzoni che sarebbero state utilizzate per partecipare ad una competizione musicale che si svolgeva a Göteborg chiamata Rockslaget. La line-up fu completata con Niklas Sundin, poco tempo dopo sostituito da Glenn Ljungström degli In Flames, alla chitarra, Mikael Stanne come cantante (Dark Tranquillity) e Johan Larsson al basso, sostituito poi da Fredrik Larsson dei Crystal Age.<br /> <br /> Il 26 marzo 1994 la band fece la propria prima apparizione al Musikens Hus di Göteborg, ma gli inizi non furono facili. Infatti la band rimase nell\'anonimato fino al 1996, Years durante il quale riuscirono a raggiungere le semifinali della competizione Rockslaget presentando le canzoni Steel Meets Steel e Unchained. Durante lo svolgimento della competizione, proprio pochi giorni prima dello svolgimento delle semifinali la band scoprì che il proprio cantante, Mikael, non sarebbe stato in grado di parteciparvi. Oscar contattò quindi Joacim Cans che, secondo la leggenda, accettò senza esitazioni ed istantaneamente la proposta fattagli dal chitarrista. Gli Hammerfall non riuscirono ad avanzare alle finali, tuttavia la cooperazione con Joacim si rivelò un successo al punto tale che, vista la buona risposta del pubblico, decisero di inviare una copia della registrazione audio alla Vic Recors. Rimasta positivamente impressionata, la Vic Records decise di dare possibilità al gruppo e nel 1997 fu pubblicato l\'album Glory to the Brave.<br /> <br /> Gli Hammerfall divennero una band a tutti gli effetti in grado di vivere di vita propria, Oscar e Joacim decisero di dedicare tutto il loro tempo agli Hammerfall. Vista la situazione, Jesper e Glenn decisero di lasciare la band per dedicarsi solamente agli In Flames e vennero sostituiti da Patrick Räfling e Stefan Elmgreen. Anche Fredrik Larsson lasciò la band, ma prima di farlo decise di aiutarla ponendola in contatto con la casa discografica Nuclear Blast che, intravedendo il potenziale del gruppo, decise di stipulare un contratto per 4 album.<br /> <br /> Nel Maggio del 1997 gli Hammerfall registrarono a scopo promozionale un singolo contenente quattro tracce distribuito in tutto il mondo e, a differenza delle aspettative di Nuclear Blast e degli Hammerfall stessi, esso si posizionò al 38esimo posto nella classifica di vendita tedesca. Fu un risultato eclatante: era infatti la più alta posizione mai raggiunta da una band metal debuttante. Le quattro canzoni dell\'album (Glory to the Brave, Hammerfall, I Believe, The Dragon Lies Bleeding) furono contraddistinte da testi che anticiparono quello che sarebbe stato il tono di tutti i successivi album: scene epiche, combattimenti, il tema del viaggio e la perdita della persona amata sono infatti ciò che caratterizzerò i testi del gruppo. Nello stesso Years, la band, orfana di un bassista, contattò ed aggiunse alla propria line-up il bassista Magnus Rosén, da quel momento in poi membro stabile del gruppo. Nello stesso Years la band decise di pubblicare il singolo Glory To The Brave a cui seguì anche un video. Nello stesso Years gli Hammerfall presero parte ad un tour di 8 date, come spalla dei Raven e dei Tank, che toccò alcuni stati europei e durante il quale fece anche un apparizione al Wacken Open Air. Il successo riscosso dalla band fu enorme, al punto tale che dopo poco tempo dal termine del tour ne intrapresero subito un altro, sempre in Europa, questa volta come spalla dei Gamma Ray e Jag Panzer. Il successo trionfale di questo tour convinse il gruppo a pubblicare l\'album anche in America e Giappone, dove vendette 100.000 copie. Il riscontro fu tale che la band fu nominata ai premi Grammy in Svezia come migliore band Hard Rock. Non vinse alcun premio, tuttavia il solo essere nominati fu considerato un grandissimo risultato per il genere.<br /> <br /> L\'inizio del 1998 vide il gruppo impegnato in un minitour di cinque date tra Belgio ed Olanda al termine del quale cominciarono a comporre un nuovo album. Legacy of Kings vide impegnato nella composizione anche l\'ex membro Jesper Strömblad che partecipò al songwriting in memoria dei tempi passati. Alla pubblicazione fu preceduto un singolo che contenente alcune registrazioni live registrate durante un concerto a Goteborg. Le registrazioni furono effettuate in 40 giorni nella stessa città presso i Fredman Studios, concedendosi brevi pause solo per partecipare ad alcuni festival tra cui Dynamo Open Air, Monsters of Rock e With Full Force. L\'album fu accolto calorosamente dai fan, i quali, tuttavia, si divisero in due grandi categorie. La prima fu quella che vide la band degli Hammerfall come i salvatori del genere metal e coloro i quali riuscirono a riportare in auge un genere, che, dopo gli anni \'80, aveva perso di forza; l\'altra categoria vide, al contrario, negli Hammerfall un gruppo commerciale molto abile che, sfruttando riff già composti da altri gruppi e semplici strutture riusciva a catalizzare l\'attenzione del pubblico ed a vendere dischi. Nell\'Ottobre del 1998 partirono per un tour europeo di 24 date insieme ai Primal Fear e successivamente si imbarcò in un tour di 27 date negli Stati Uniti come spalla dei Death.<br /> <br /> [font=Times]IL GENERE[/font]<br /> Il power metal si caratterizza principalmente per le ritmiche molto serrate di matrice thrash, per i riff potenti, per lo stile batteristico velocissimo e caratterizzato da un uso frenetico della doppia cassa.
