Incentrato principalmente sul multiplayer, il gioco di Gas Powered Games tenta di portare una ventata d’aria fresca nel genere, mescolando elementi tipici degli RPG con la strategia in tempo reale e persino qualche idea presa in prestito dagli sparatutto online, per dare vita ad un titolo incentrato sul multiplayer, dallo stile molto particolare, non solo nel gameplay.<br /> <br /> <br /> [b]Ne resterà soltanto uno[/b]<br /> <br /> Demigod non ha una vera trama, ma più che altro un semplice pretesto per gettare nell’arena di gioco gli otto semidei, in guerra per accaparrarsi un posto rimasto vacante nel pantheon delle divinità. Di contro, lo stile generale è a dir poco eccezionale. I diversi giganti godono di un character design originale ed accattivante, così come le diverse arene, tanto da far in parte rimpiangere la mancanza di una vera trama che avrebbe potuto sfruttare il particolarissimo mondo ideato dagli artisti di Gas Powered Games. Abbandonata quasi completamente la struttura classica degli strategici in tempo reale, il titolo Stardock stupisce da subito non proponendo una campagna principale, ma solo la possibilità di scontrarsi in Skirmish o in un torneo, sia in single player che in multiplayer. La modalità a singolo giocatore funge in realtà quasi solo da riscaldamento con l’intelligenza artificiale, utile per prepararsi agli scontri con gli avversari umani. Totalmente assente, invece, una qualunque forma di tutorial, demandata esclusivamente al libretto di istruzione e qualche scarno suggerimento durante le partite, scelta, a nostro parere, per lo meno azzardata vista la tipologia del gioco, decisamente poco usuale. 
Selezionata la modalità, potrete poi scegliere uno degli otto Demigod, divisi in due categorie: Assassini e Generali. I primi sono degli eccellenti combattenti, perfetti per lo scontro diretto col nemico, mentre i secondi preferiscono non sporcarsi le mani, se non strettamente necessario, grazie alla loro capacità di evocare e controllare delle altre unità più piccole, chiamate minions. La differenziazione tra i vari Demigod è molto evidente anche tra l’uno e l’altro e non solo esteticamente. Oltre a presentare una caratterizzazione davvero notevole, sul campo di battaglia noterete presto le differenze di approccio che ognuno di essi vi richiederà. Ad esempio l’orrenda Unclean Beast, si muove veloce ed altrettanto rapidamente sa eliminare il nemico a suon di artigliate e attacchi speciali. Ben più massiccio è Rook, una vera e propria fortezza ambulante, perfetto per sbaragliare le difese nemiche e ridurre in polvere gli edifici del vostro avversario. Tra i generali merita sicuramente una menzione la bella quanto letale Queen of Thorns, fata senza scrupoli, in grado di evocare strane creature mezze vegetali e mezze animali. La sensazione di stupore, nello scoprire i diversi personaggi partoriti dalla fervida immaginazione del gruppo di Chris Taylor, una volta avviata una partita, lascerà presto spazio alla curiosità per le particolari dinamiche di gioco orchestrate dagli sviluppatori.<br /> <br /> <br /> [b]Quando basta avere delle idee[/b]<br /> <br /> Sul campo di battaglia, costituito da arene chiuse di forma e dimensione molto variabile l’una dall’altra, vi ritroverete coi Demigod compagni di squadra nella vostra fortezza, dove potrete acquistare, con le poche monete a disposizione, delle pozioni e scegliere la prima skill da assegnare ad uno dei quattro slot disponibili. A difendere il vostro campo base noterete delle torrette che sparano dei raggi, ma potrete anche voi con delle speciali abilità rinforzare le diverse costruzioni ed in particolare la cittadella, edificio più importante dell’accampamento, la cui distruzione significa la fine della partita. Lo scopo del gioco è infatti riuscire a penetrare le linee nemiche e raderne al suolo la cittadella, cercando, nel frattempo, di conquistare più bandiere possibili, sparse per il terreno di gioco, utili a guadagnare molti punti esperienza. Altri elementi già presenti all’inizio della partita e che sarà utile riuscire a controllare, sono i portali per teletrasportare i minions da una parte all’altra della mappa e i punti di raccolta dell’oro, che saranno la vostra fonte di risorse monetarie, necessarie se si vuole acquistare degli upgrade più potenti. L’altra risorsa spendibile è l’esperienza, che oltre a farvi salire di livello, vi permetterà sia di migliorare le vostre abilità che di impararne di nuove, sfruttando uno schema ad albero preso di peso dalla tradizione degli RPG. La flessibilità di questo sistema è tale da permettere una profonda personalizzazione del proprio alter ego direttamente sul campo di battaglia così da poter seguire l’andamento dello scontro. Similmente a quanto si è abituati a vedere nelle sfide online di un qualunque sparatutto, in Demigod se morirete verrete resuscitati nel campo base della vostra squadra entro circa venti secondi, che possono variare grazie ad alcuni bonus o malus.<br /> Difficile descrivere ogni variante che il sistema di regole ideato dai programmatori rende possibile, ma dopo svariate ore di gioco, la sensazione restituita è di una grande profondità di gioco, unità ad una velocità più vicina ad un gioco d’azione che non ad uno strategico. Vi ritroverete spesso a correre dal campo base ad una zona di scontro, per dare man forte ai vostri compagni, o a sfruttare la momentanea disattenzione per infiltrarvi dietro le difese ed indebolire le strutture nemiche, cercando magari nel frattempo di guadagnare preziosi punti esperienza conquistando delle bandiere. Correndo al campo base nella disperata speranza di non soccombere sotto gli attacchi nemici, penserete in anticipo a quali upgrade acquistare una volta raggiunto il negozio e che potrebbero tornarvi utili quando sarete finalmente pronti a tornare in azione.<br /> A dimostrazione dell’ottimo lavoro svolto da Gas Powered Games ci pensa un AI, ben lungi dall’essere solo un palliativo aggiunto senza troppa attenzione ma, invece, molto ben sviluppata e davvero ostica e versatile. In fine, si fa notare nella modalità skirmish sia in singolo che in multiplayer, la possibilità di personalizzare in ogni dettaglio le regole della partita.<br /> <br /> <br /> [b]Il videogioco è un\'arte?[/b]<br /> <br /> Demigod non è solo un gioiello di giocabilità, ma ha molto da offrire anche in termini sia di qualità del design che di capacità tecnica dell’engine. Ciò che salta subito all’occhio è l’originalità e bellezza dei diversi personaggi, modellati ed animati con molta cura con uno stile affascinante. Lo stesso vale per le arene, al contempo studiate con intelligenza dal punto di vista del gameplay, offrendo ognuna di esse una sfida differente grazie alla particolare disposizione dei vari elementi, e molto belle da vedere. Il motore di gioco riesce a gestire il tutto con grande agilità, probabilmente anche grazie ad un numero di unità non elevatissimo, senza perdere dettagli anche a livello di zoom massimo. Il gioco non perde colpi neanche sul fronte audio, con un campionamento di effetti e voci adeguato, ed in particolare va citato lo speaker in pieno stile Unreal Tournament. Chiudono il cerchio le musiche, ottime su tutti i fronti, ed in grado di seguire dinamicamente l’andamento della partita. Chiudono il giudizio sul gioco alcuni problemi nelle partite online, segnalati al momento dell’uscita ma risolvibili con le patch già disponibili sul sito ufficiale. Inoltre dispiace la scelta di non sviluppare un background potenzialmente interessante con una campagna principale legata ad una trama.<br /> <br /> <br /> [b]Multiplayer[/b]<br /> <br /> Fulcro dell’intera produzione, la modalità multiplayer permette scontri fino a dieci giocatori, divisi in due squadre da cinque. E’ possibile comunque sfruttare l’elaborata intelligenza artificiale per completare il proprio team in caso di necessità, anche se purtroppo non è prevista nessuna funzione per controllarne il comportamento. Le modalità, oltre alle già citate skirmish e torneo, prevedono anche una classifica permanente, visionabile sul sito ufficiale, e denominata Pantheon. In conclusione segnaliamo come al momento dell’uscita americana, il net-code si sia rivelato non del tutto affidabile, problema apparentemente risolto successivamente con il rilascio di alcuni aggiornamenti, fatto che evidenzia un buon supporto da parte della software house, e che dovrebbe garantire la longevità del titolo. <br /> <br /> <br /> [b]Commento Finale[/b]<br /> <br /> Strategico e adrenalinico, due parole che difficilmente pensavamo potessero coabitare nella descrizione di uno stesso gioco, ma che calzano a pennello per questa nuova produzione Stardock. Chris Taylor e i suoi sono riusciti a risollevarsi dalla brutta figura fatta con Space Siege, sfornando un gioco originale sia nel gameplay che nello stile. Inoltre, nonostante la forte impronta multiplayer, Demigod è godibilissimo anche in singolo, grazie all’intelligenza artificiale davvero agguerrita implementata dai programmatori. Uniche due vere grosse mancanze ci sono parse il tutorial, che in un titolo così diverso dalla massa sarebbe stato più utile che mai, e una storia principale che sviluppasse dei personaggi così carismatici.
