I N H A L T

Kapit�nleutnant Lehmann-Willenbrock (J�rgen Prochnow) - genannt der Kaleu (Kapit�nleutnant) - und seine 50 Marinesoldaten gehen zu Wasser. Sie sollen im Atlantik mit der U-96 nach feindlichen Schiffen fahnden. Mit an Bord sind u.a. der Kriegsberichterstatter Werner (Herbert Gr�nemeyer), Lehmanns Stellvertreter Fritz Grade (Klaus Wennemann), der am liebsten nach Hause zu seiner schwer kranken Frau m�chte, der erste Offizier (Hubert Bengsch), der einzig 150ige Nazi an Bord und der leicht zynische zweite Offizier (Martin Semmelrogge). Bei einem Man�ver gegen feindliche Schiffe wird die U-96, nachdem sie Torpedos abgeschossen hat, von einem Zerst�rer in arge Bedr�ngnis gebracht. Lehmann l�sst das U-Boot immer tiefer tauchen, 150 Meter und mehr; das Boot droht zu zerbersten. Erst nach etlichen Stunden wagt Lehmann es, wieder aufzutauchen - und schie�t auf ein brennendes feindliches Schiff erneut einen Torpedo ab. Erst danach bemerken die Besatzungsmitglieder, dass sich an Bord des beschossenen Schiffs noch Lebende befinden, die allesamt umkommen.

Nach der R�ckkehr der U-96 erh�lt Lehmann den Auftrag, durch die Meerenge von Gibraltar in den italienischen Hafen La Spezia einzulaufen - ein m�rderisches Unternehmen. Lehmann will die nur sechs Kilometer breite Meerenge, die von englischen Schiffen nat�rlich stark kontrolliert wird, bei Nacht anlaufen, dann tauchen, die Motoren abstellen in der Hoffnung, die Str�mung treibe die U-96 ins Mittelmeer. Doch das Boot wird von einem feindlichen Flugzeuggeschwader entdeckt, beschossen und sinkt bis auf eine Tiefe von 260 Metern. Wasser dringt durch die platzenden W�nde ein. Lehmann allerdings gibt nicht auf. Zum Gl�ck setzt das Schiff vor einem weiteren Absinken auf. Nach den notwendigen Reparaturen und dem Ausschaffen des Wassers sieht Lehmann nur noch eine Chance, das Boot wieder flott zu machen, sprich aufzutauchen ...
