Yoshimi, nel mezzo di una causa legale di divorzio col marito, tenta di ottenere l\'affidamento della piccola Ikuko. A questo proposito si trasferisce con la figlia in un appartamento sito in un vecchio stabile afflitto dalle infiltrazioni dell\'acqua. Presto si accorgerà suo malgrado, che l\'acqua nasconde qualcosa di triste e angosciante capace di minare la tranquillità della sua nuova famiglia....Nakata firma questo nuovo capolavoro consacrandosi definitivamente nel panorama horror mondiale. Il film è angosciante e riesce a calare lo spettatore in una suspance a tutto tondo che lo avvolge e non gli lascia via di fuga. Il regista gioca sapientemente con il pubblico sferzandogli repentine stilettate capaci di farlo vacillare senza dargli mai modo di capire se ciò che ha visto è reale oppure no. Nel film ritornano le tematiche care a Nakata: il ruolo di madre nella lotta per proteggere il proprio figlio, il clima piovoso e umido, il simbolico rimando al corpo materno. In conclusione un film che va visto e assaporato fino in fondo, nel quale non viene versata neanche una goccia di sangue ma tanta, tantissima, soffocante, opprimente acqua.

In seguito al divorzio dal marito, Yoshimi si trasferisce con la figlioletta Ikuko in uno scalcinato palazzo di periferia. Strani rumori provenienti dall\'appartamento superiore disabitato, uno zainetto che continua a comparire nei luoghi più inusuali, una macchia d\'umido che trasuda innaturalmente dal soffitto: tutto apparirà legato alla scomparsa di una bambina, avvenuta tempo prima in circostanze misteriose. Dark Water rappresenta la consacrazione di Hideo Nakata all\'horror: dimostrando capacità evolutiva e coerenza stilistica, il regista conferma reali doti di story-telling e gestione della tensione. La plumbea cortina degli esterni e la implacabile cappa di condensa degli interni delineano un\' atmosfera fitta, generando un contesto fertile per lo sviluppo di una ghost-story doc, che sfrutta appieno il fascino spettrale degli immobili nipponici. Il risultato è un horror d\'ambiente attento alle caratterizzazioni, dove la coralità compositiva si mescola all\' intuizione registica, in un fluire continuo verso territori inquieti. Un\'opera diretta, pullulante di simboli e temi assurti a veri e propri leit-motiv dell\'horror orientale, che trova nella semplicità, senza troppi sbalzi di volume, la propria validità espressiva.

Una giovane donna, reduce da un divorzio, e la sua bambina si trasferiscono in un nuovo appartamento all\'interno di uno squallido palazzo di periferia. E\' un palazzo inquietante, e quando dell\'acqua comincia a scendere dal soffito macchiato dall\'umidità, per le protagoniste inizia una discesa sempre più veloce verso l\'ignoto, in cui verranno a contatto con realtà spaventose. L\'acqua in generale e in particolare la pioggia battente sono un elemento fondamentale che accompagna tutto questo Dark Water, e che è presente in larga misura nella filmografia di Hideo Nakata, che ancora una volta si ispira a una storia di Koji Suzuki, ormai più volte definito come \"Stephen King dell\'Oriente\", per la popolarità raggiunta con le sue storie spaventose.
Il film si svolge per gran parte proprio all\'interno del palazzo, che può essere considerato come uno dei protagonisti della vicenda, oltre che il luogo in cui la stessa si svolge.
Nakata dirige con mano sicura un\'opera che non smette in nessun momento di mettere in tensione, ogni inquadratura ha il suo significato nel quadro generale di paura che intende metterci addosso; il regista ci guida con decisione e senza prolissità all\'interno dell\'atmosfera fradicia del quartiere, sempre più a stringere sui personaggi, fino a scaraventarci nel bel mezzo del dramma. Rientra certamente nella categoria horror, ma non è affatto avventato sottolineare la valenza drammatica di cui è intrisa la vicenda, che assume risvolti umani commoventi nell\'ottica della situazione in cui versano madre e figlia, vittime della realtà triste, e allo stesso tempo esploratrici, pioniere di una realtà parallela quanto mai inquietante.
Un impatto visivo ottimo, grazie anche al supporto della bella fotografia, sognante, molto tendente al grigio e al blu, con toni scuri imponenti.
Dicevamo della regia, davvero eccezionale. Ogni espediente del cinema horror viene usato in chiave molto più originale del solito, e ovviamente in maniera molto più efficace. Ottime anche le musiche, e più in generale il sonoro, che sottolinea i momenti salienti, e insieme alle immagini, forma un mix forse senza precedenti.
E\' importante sicuramente il senso del \"non visto\", concetto fondamentale nel cinema horror orientale: lo spettatore è più inquietato da qualcosa che gli viene volutamente nascosto, piuttosto che mostrato banalmente. Ciò introduce in chi assiste al film una \"tensione sotterranea\" che fa capire che qualcosa non va, un senso di profondo disagio apparentemente inspiegabile.
Ottime interpretazioni per le due protagoniste (tra l\'altro la bambina è una assoluta esordiente al cinema), ben inserite nel contesto drammatico.
Per concludere, davvero un ottimo lavoro, quanto di meglio mi sia capitato di vedere in questo genere cinematografico, che in Oriente sta vivendo un periodo d\'oro, grazie alla ventata di originalità che porta rispetto ai prevedibili e \"controllati\" horror americani.
