It takes a little something extra to stand out from the crowd now, and Epica has that something. The band is from the Netherlands, and The Divine Conspiracy is Epica\'s fourth full-length.<br /> This album combines a dark, haunting gothic atmosphere with bombastic and symphonic music. The songs are sometimes epic, grand and majestic, other times more subdued and introspective. It\'s a lengthy album (75 minutes long) that takes the listener through an audio journey that ebbs and flows, rises and falls, and brings something new and interesting around every musical corner.<br /> Vocalist Simone Simons has an excellent voice. She sometimes sings with a clear alto voice that has a flawless tone and a lot of emotion. Other times she sings with an operatic soprano. Inizialmente la band prese il nome di \"Sahara Dust\".<br /> Nel novembre del 2002 venne registrata una demo intitolata Cry for the Moon, della quale furono rilasciate solo 100 copie nel gennaio 2003, e che conteneva solo due canzoni: Cry for the Moon, scritta da Jansen, e Illusive Consensus, scritta da Simons. La canzone Cry for the Moon tratta il tema scottante dei preti pedofili e della copertura che le gerarchie della chiesa cattolica forniscono ad essi. La band si esibì per la prima volta il 15 dicembre 2002 a Tilburg, Olanda, come supporter degli Anathema.<br /> Nel marzo 2003 Mark decise di cambiare il nome della band in Epica, in onore dell\'album dei Kamelot, e nel giugno dello stesso anno venne rilasciato il loro primo album: The Phantom Agony, dal quale sono stati estratti tre singoli: The Phantom Agony, Feint e Cry for the Moon. Dei primi due singoli sono stati girati anche i video.<br /> Nell\'ottobre 2004 la band rilascia il dvd We Will Take You With Us, che contiene un\'esibizione della band con il coro e l\'orchestra, due performance acustiche di Feint e di Run for a Fall, un documentario e l\'inedito Memory, cover del famoso brano tratto dal musical \"Cats\".<br /> Dopo il successo del cd e del DVD, la band torna in studio, e il 21 aprile 2005 esce Consign to Oblivion, il loro secondo disco, ispirato ai Maya, a cui segue il 10 maggio il singolo Solitary Ground, accompagnato da un video.<br /> Il 15 settembre 2005 esce già un terzo disco: The Score - An Epic Journey, colonna sonora del film, Joyride. Il 21 ottobre è la volta del singolo Quietus (in due versioni), che, nonostante sia uscito dopo il rilascio di The Score, e la versione della canzone assomigli alla \"Score version\", è un estratto dell\'album Consign to Oblivion.<br /> Nel maggio 2006 esce l\'audiobook The Road to Paradiso, un libro che racconta la storia della band da quando aveva ancora il nome di Sahara Dust fino al loro entusiasmante concerto al Paradiso di Amsterdam.<br /> Il 28 agosto 2007, (7 settembre per l\'Europa), esce il disco The Divine Conspiracy, che segnala una svolta nello stile della band, mostrando una maturità compositiva inaspettata, un metal molto sinfonico con numerosi passaggi orchestrali, acustici e con atmosfere che tendono a creare passaggi adatti a colonne sonore di film.<br /> Il concept di The Divine Conspiracy riguarda \"la teoria che il protagonista ha rivelato: L’idea è basata sulla teoria per cui, come prova, Dio creò tutte le diverse religioni e le diede agli Uomini per vedere se fossero in grado di comprenderne la vera natura, capendo che tutte le religioni sono da ricondurre a una sola. L’umanità lo capirà o continuerà a uccidere le persone che lo comprendono ?\"<br /> Genere<br /> Gli Epica sono considerati una band che fonde principalmente Symphonic metal, Melodic Death metal, Symphonic gothic metal, Symphonic power metal, progressive metal e Symphonic black metal. Il chitarrista e compositore Mark Jansen ha dichiarato che togliendo la voce di Simone e le orchestrazioni rimarrebbe solamente il Death Metal.<br /> La cantante Simone Simons preferisce descrivere gli Epica come symphonic metal, mentre il tastierista definisce il proprio genere come \"un ponte tra il symphonic metal ed il gothic metal\".<br /> Le canzoni degli Epica sono spesso arricchite da melodie arabe e da porzioni di testo in latino.<br /> Quasi tutti i membri della band preferiscono non esser descritti come Gothic metal in quanto questo genere rappresenta solo un\'influenza marginale.<br /> Molti notano che il sound della band si è molto appesantito dall\'entrata nel gruppo di Isaac Delahaye, ex chitarrista della band Death metal God Dethrone.<br /> Lo stile degli Epica prevede cori maestosi, orchestrazioni da colonna sonora, chitarre potenti, melodie epiche ed un intersecarsi fra il Growl/Scream di Mark Jansen e la soave voce di Simone Simons.
