Befriending Lefty Ruggiero, Pistone (under the name Donnie Brasco) is able to embed himself in a mafia faction lead by Sonny Black. Ruggiero and Pistone become tight as the group goes about collecting money for 'the bosses'. Eventually, the group become big time when Black himself becomes a boss, all the while Pistone collects evidence. However, the trials and tribulations of the undercover work become more than Pistone can bear. His marriage falls apart and to top it off, the mafia suspect a mole in the organization. Pistone (Johnny Depp) isi ia numele de Donnie Brasco si se imprieteneste cu Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino), un cap mafiot, a carui viata personala se duce de rapa. Cu o sotie care vrea sa-l paraseasca si cu un fiu toxicoman, Lefty se simte descumpanit. De treizeci de ani in Mafie, cu 26 de victime la activ, el realizeaza ca nu a devenit, nicidecum, persoana la care visa cand a hotarit sa se dea cu baietii rai pentru a trai o viata fara grija zilei de maine. Tanarul Donnie Brasco pare a fi exact o proiectie a persoanei sale in tinerete. Il va lua sub aripa sa protectoare si sub aceasta tutela Donnie va accede imediat in varfurile ierarhiei gangsterilor. Atras de mirajul acestei lumi, Donnie pare sa uite ca de fapt el este Joe Pistone, neglijandu-si misiunea. Pe masura ce se ataseaza de Lefty, Donnie isi da seama ca ii va fi cumplit de greu, daca nu imposibil sa-l dea pe acesta pe mana FBI-ului cand sefii sai i-o vor cere. Periculoasa relatie dintre un criminal si un politist tocmit sa-l aduca in fata legii poate avea urmari tragice. Atata timp cat Donnie nu-si deconspira adevarata identitate, totul merge bine, dar suspiciunile altor lideri ai clanului mafiot din care face parte Lefty nu vor intarzia sa apara. Ascensiunea lui Dominick Napolitano, supranumit Sonny Black (interpretat superb de Michael Madsen, protagonistul serialului Razbunare fara limite) nu va fi de bun augur pentru cei doi. Ceea ce parea o misiune riscanta se transforma pentru Joe Pistone intr-o problema de viata si de moarte. Casnicia i se destrama si gangsterii incep sa simta ca cineva ii sapa din interior. Dilema lui Donnie Brasco va fi cu atat mai sfasietoare, cu cat acesta stie ca daca va iesi din Familie, Ruggiero va fi pedepsit. Daca-si va turna prietenul, acesta va infunda puscaria. Iesirea din acest impas nu o stie decat Donnie Brasco. Adevaratul Joe Pistone traieste si in ziua de azi sub o alta identitate. El beneficiaza de un contract de 500 de milioane de dolari semnat cu producatorii filmului. Inedit este faptul ca producatorul principal al lui Donnie Brasco, Lou DiGiamo l-a cunoscut pe adevaratul Joe Pistone inca din liceu. El avea sa-l convinga peste ani si ani sa scrie o carte despre insolita sa experienta. Ulterior s-a facut filmul.
