Already eight years ago, \"Somewhere Far Beyond\" had been my very first contact with BLIND GUARDIAN. At first the great cover had caught my attention and led me to checking out the CD. After that there were no holds barred anymore...
After a short Spanish guitar-intro \"Time What Is Time\" comes crashing through with its thrashy guitars, just to unfold as an epic Melodic/Speed-grenade with a grand chorus, followed by the equally great \"Journey Through The Dark\". It really didn\'t need much more to put me under its spell.
You can take any track, \"The Quest For Tanelorn\", where GAMMA RAY-mastermind Kai Hansen is adding his share, the heavy \"Ashes To Ashes\", the two \"The Bard\'s Song\"s or the very epic title-track, including a bagpipe-intermezzo - each one of them all-time-classics!
And if that alone had not been enough, there also are three bonus-tracks to be found, back then still titled as CD-bonus... Besides a classic version of \"Theatre Of Pain\", that hasn\'t really worked out, two cover-version could be found: \"Spread Your Wings\" by QUEEN and \"Trial By Fire\" by SATAN, both expertly covered, just like almost all versions made by BLIND GUARDIAN.
So, \"Somewhere Far Beyond\" is a classic and remains a classic of German Heavy Metal, heavy, fast, melodic and epic, just as it should be!

Blind Guardian are legends in the power metal scene, and for a damn good reason: they\'re utterly amazing. I was never the biggest power metal fan, but something about Blind Guardian and this album in particular just clicks with me. Usually power metal is far too cheesy, not heavy enough, or just too flat out stupid and unoriginal for me to care. However, everything about this album, from start to finish, is exactly how power metal SHOULD sound. I could listen to this album every day and never get bored with it; it\'s that good.
Of course, the main draw to this band is the strong vocals of Hansi, and he is in fine form here. Later on, Hansi would have too much fun experimenting with vocal layers and such, but for the most part here, he\'s fairly restrained and never feels as over the top as he has been as of late. Hansi\'s voice commands the music, and without him, Blind Guardian would be a good, but not great, band. He has charisma, power and emotion; in short, what every power metal vocalist should aspire to be. Like earlier reviewers have mentioned, he sounds like a Middle Ages bard that has somehow found his way to our time. Standout track \"The Quest for Tanelorn\" shows how versatile Hansi is, and is one of the instances where the choir vocals are used properly in Blind Guardian; the chorus is simply spellbinding. Of course, I may be slightly biased as I love the Eternal Champion novels this song is based on, and this song is a fitting soundtrack for parts of them.
The other main draw of this album, for me at least, is the guitars. Moving effortlessly through great riffing, melancholy quiet parts and blazing solos, the guitars are all over the place. André Olbrich really is one of the best in the business, and he shines here. His solos are tasteful and have just enough shred to make you really sit up and take notice without getting bored by excess wankery. Drums and bass aren\'t really noticeable, although there are some awesome double bass runs here and there that build tension in the music; the rhythm section is solid, nothing more needs be said.
The acoustic parts and ballads are also really well done; usually, ballads are the downfall for most PM bands, but the combination of Hansi\'s emotional output and André\'s skillful playing make them work. Although later on in their career Blind Guardian would veer a bit too far into melodramatic territory, everything just works here. Even \"Black Chamber,\" which is just Hansi and a piano, is stunning. It is rare that a vocalist can put such genuine emotion into their music.
The icing on the cake for this album is the production. It is, hands down, some of the best production on a metal album I have ever heard. Heavy, crystal clear guitars, a nice, even mix, powerful and upfront vocals, it\'s really great. I wish more metal bands had the skill and money to get a production like this. It\'s a pleasure to listen to.
Even for someone who doesn\'t particularly like power metal, this album is utterly amazing. I can\'t find a single bad thing about it. I love it.

They\'re back! Yes, finally we are getting more from Hansi and friends. Be warned, this album is brilliant but it takes some work to get into it. Going to the opera with Blind Guardian truly requires some effort on the part of the listener, so this is not something you want to play in the background!
Let me explain... Listening to the album for the first time, I knew I had just listened to something grand and outstanding, but I could not grasp onto anything. No song, melody, chorus, or guitar riff particularly stuck in my head to make me want to revisit that particular piece. However, being a loyal Blind Guardian fan, I just listened to the album whenever I could, and after about the third time around, things started to take shape, melodies and guitar work began to crystallize, and the album began to reveal its beauty.
Before I get into some of the songs, I need to tell you first off that there are two components to this album that make me give it a 10/10 rating right away: Andre\'s guitars and Thomen\'s drums. I don\'t know of anybody else who can play a solo on top of somebody else\'s (Hansi\'s) vocals the way Andre can. And Thomen, who was always good before, completely outdoes himself here with versatility, skill, and power.
Ok, favorites. Most definitely I have to mention \'Sadly sings Destiny\', which contains work, once more, from the brilliant Choir Company, Blind Guardian\'s own group of background singers. \'The Soulforged\' is another great song, as typical of Blind Guardian as any. \'Age of false Innocence\' displays Hansi\'s mature lyric writing ability. This song, in my understanding, deals with somebody\'s struggle between religion and science - a topic someone could write a whole book about.
This album gives you (almost) no chance to catch your breath until the very end. \'And then there was Silence\' is probably the most complex, multi-layered song Blind Guardian have ever done and it also must have taken the most work. There is more in this one song than many other bands are capable of putting into an entire album. The bonus track, a tender, melancholy ballad, \'Harvest of Sorrow\' (not available on all releases) was recorded in different languages (French, Italian, Spanish). Hm, personally, I would have loved to hear it in German!
Again, show some patience with this album. What may sound at first like a little too much \"sameness\" is really packed full of surprises and versatility. And all components are linked together in bombastic grandeur that would not be complete if any of the songs were missing. Blind Guardian spent a lot of time recording this and it was definitely worth the wait. And one last tip: check out the photos from the recording session on the official Blind Guardian website (www.blind-guardian.com). They are really quite funny.

A complete concept-album about Tolkein\'s \"Silmarillion\", who else than BLIND GUARDIAN would be suited to transfer this into the Heavy Metal-realm?
There had been some fears that BLIND GUARDIAN would either die from over-production or start to copy themselves, but once more the Krefeld-based band proves that they stand high above any such things, \"Nightfall In Middle-Earth\" has turned out to be just the killer-album we all had hoped for.
Half of the 22 tracks are mostly spoken interludes, which conceptually connect the songs and make the whole album one real story. And musically they, too, are more variable than ever, relatively straight Melodic Speed is featured in \"Into The Storm\", \"The Curse Of Feanor\" or also \"When Sorrow Sang\", \"Nightfall\" or \"A Dark Passage\" patrol the mid-paced regions. \"Thorn\" and especially \"Blood Tears\" are incredibly densely arranged, which show the multi-dimensional quality of BLIND GUARDIAN\'s song-writing skills, with many changes of mood and also sounds, but never even remotely turning progressive or even complex, underlining the quality of the band\'s compository class.
\"Mirror Mirror\" is one of the two absolute highlights (well, you\'d also have to add in \"Blood Tears\"), you could simplify it by describing it as the \"Bright Eyes\" of \"Nightfall In Middle-Earth\", catchy, flowing, while \"Time Stands Still (At The Iron Hill)\" excels in its grandiose choir, which is among the strongest BLIND GUARDIAN have used so far!
Grand melodies, even grander choirs, intricate arrangements, a still crunchy heaviness, variability en masse and all of that packed into a brilliant production, you just have to label BLIND GUARDIAN as what they truly are: World-class!
