Redmond Barry, un giovane irlandese di modeste condizioni, sfida a duello, per amore di sua cugina Nora, un capitano inglese che l\'ha chiesta in moglie. Convinto d\'aver ucciso il rivale, parte per Dublino, ma lungo la strada viene derubato, per cui è costretto ad arruolarsi nell\'esercito inglese, in lotta contro i francesi. La morte di un capitano suo amico, e le atrocità della guerra, lo inducono a disertare, ma è scoperto e per cavarsela non gli resta che militare con i prussiani, alleati degli inglesi. Essendosi fatto onore sul campo di battaglia, si vede affidare, dal ministro della polizia prussiana, l\'incarico di sorvegliare uno straniero, giocatore professionista, che si suppone sia una spia. Diventato suo amico, invece, Barry lascia la Prussia per seguirlo nei suoi pellegrinaggi fra la buona società\' di mezza Europa. Gli capita, così, d\'incontrare la bella Lady Lyndon, moglie di un uomo anziano e malandato, alla cui morte Barry succede nel talamo. Dovrebbe, questo matrimonio, essere il culmine della sua fortuna: lo condurrà, invece, alla rovina.

Barry Lyndon (1975) is a period film by Stanley Kubrick based on the novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon (1844) by William Makepeace Thackeray. It recounts the exploits of an unscrupulous 18th century Irish adventurer (Barry Lyndon né Redmond Barry), particularly his rise and fall within English society. Ryan O\'Neal stars as the title character.

In recent years, it has come to be regarded not only as one of Kubrick\'s finest films, but indeed as a classic of world cinema. It was part of Time magazine\'s poll of the 100 best films as well as the Village Voice poll conducted in 1999 and was ranked #27 in 2002 in a poll of film critics conducted by Sight and Sound. Director Martin Scorsese has cited Barry Lyndon as his favorite Kubrick movie. Quotations from it appeared in such disparate works as Scorsese\'s The Age of Innocence, Lars von Trier\'s Dogville and Wes Anderson\'s Rushmore.

Dal romanzo (1844) di William Makepeace Thackeray: la scalata sociale di Redmond Barry dopo il matrimonio con Lady Lyndon e la successiva discesa nel baratro dell’oblio. Il film più elegante di Kubrick, dove ogni scena sembra un quadro, dove gli attori si muovono al ritmo delle splendide musiche, dove l’insistente voce fuori campo puntualizza ogni minimo particolare come in una perfetta biografia, dove sembra di essere in pieno ‘700, dove le stanze - riprese con un particolare obiettivo Zeiss fatto costruire appositamente e in seguito utilizzato in campo spaziale - sono veramente illuminate dalle sole candele. [IMG]http://ruthlessreviews.com/pics4/barrylyndon4.jpg[/IMG] Perfetto in ogni sua parte, passato alla storia per i suoi celebri zoom, con scene meravigliose (quella della seduzione muta fra Redmond Barry e Lady Lyndon prima al tavolo da gioco, poi nella veranda esterna con le musiche a cadenzare i movimenti è uno dei più strabilianti pezzi di cinema di tutti i tempi) e commoventi (la morte del figlioletto Brian). Soltanto Kubrick poteva girare un film così, lungo e lentissimo, senza annoiare un solo momento. Un capolavoro e il più lucido documento di come non sia l’ambiente storico-sociale a determinare l’uomo e le sue azioni. Il film storico e in costume più bello che sia mai stato realizzato. Lord Bullingdon è interpretato da Leon Vitali, che ha dimenticato le velleità d’attore ed è diventato l’assistente personale di Kubrick (per la scelta del cast, delle locations, ecc.). Quattro Oscar non fondamentali (Kubrick, incredibilmente come nel caso di Sergio Leone, non l’ha mai vinto per la regia o il film), tra cui ai costumi di Milena Canonero e Ulla-Britt Soderlund. Kubrick ebbe a dire, saggiamente, che un’opera che parla del futuro come del passato, e che quindi va immaginata, è di fantascienza.
