Il concerto per il Bangladesh ha segnato un\'epoca. È stato il primo esempio noto globalmente di concerto organizzato per raccogliere fondi a scopo benefico. Era il 1 agosto 1971, e in quel periodo il giovane stato asiatico stava vivendo momenti drammatici.
George Harrison, svincolato dall\'esperienza Beatles, raccolse con sé grandi stelle della musica sul palco del Madison Square Garden di New York.
Nella riscoperta attuale di materiale da riversare su Dvd, non poteva mancare anche questo grande evento, il concerto non ha assolutamente perduto il suo fascino.

Il concerto per il Bangladesh ha segnato un\'epoca. È stato il primo esempio noto globalmente di concerto organizzato per raccogliere fondi a scopo benefico. Era il 1 agosto 1971, e in quel periodo il giovane stato asiatico stava vivendo momenti drammatici. Già conosciuto con il nome di Pakistan orientale, aveva deciso di diventare indipendente dal governo di Islamabad che scatenò un conflitto. L\'India corse in aiuto della nuova nazione, ma ovviamente della guerra ne fece le spese la popolazione civile. George Harrison, svincolato dall\'esperienza Beatles, raccolse con sé grandi stelle della musica sul palco del Madison Square Garden di New York. Non c\'era ancora la strada della televisione via satellite come nel recente caso del Live 8, a raccontare l\'evento in tutto il mondo. Però c\'era il cinema e presto il grande schermo celebrò, grazie alla regia di Saul Swimmer, il concerto che uscì poi in triplo vinile e doppia audiocassetta. Ovvio che, nella riscoperta attuale (benemerita) di materiale da riversare su Dvd, non poteva mancare anche questo grande evento. Esiste anche il doppio Cd rimasterizzato, ma l\'immagine è sicuramente più importante nel caso di un concerto come il Bangla Desh. Perche è bello vedere come iniziò: sul palco salì un uomo indiano dalla piccola statura, sempre sorridente, di nome Ravi Shankar. Suonava uno strumento a molti sconosciuto, il sitar, complicato e affascinante nel suono e nella forma. Eppure il mondo della musica popolare e del rock\'n\'roll aveva già iniziato a conoscerlo come ispiratore di alcune atmosfere dei Beatles (soprattutto del già citato Harrison) e per la partecipazione al Festival di Monterrey, precedente alla grande kermesse di Woodstock. Shankar, nella prima facciata in vinile del triplo album, presentò un lungo brano chiamato Bangla Duhn. Grazie a questa partecipazione, la musica indiana e l\'arte di Shankar iniziarono a fare breccia nel pubblico e in tanti artisti che vollero collaborare con lui: da Yehudi Menhuin a Philip Glass, Jean-Pierre Rampal e tanti altri. Poi i musicisti come Billy Preston, solista in That\'s the way God planned it, Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, Ringo Starr, Klaus Voorman al basso, Jesse Ed Davis alla chitarra, il gruppo Badfinger, la sezione fiati diretta da Jim Horn. E poi Bob Dylan, segnando un momento particolare di un evento già di per sé memorabile. L\'arrivo di Dylan cambiò tutto, almeno per i brani che lo videro protagonista. Abbandonò il pianoforte per imbracciare il basso (così come faceva nella band di immortalata in Mad dogs & Englishmen), Ringo Starr scese dallabatteria e prese in mano il tamburello. Harrison restò come chitarra solista accanto a Dylan, chitarra acustica, armonica e inconfondibile voce. Bene, a questo puntro troviamo subito un grosso, enorme difetto: l\'assenza di Mr.Tambourine Man. Non solo per la riconosciuta bellezza del brano, ma proprio perché nel film aveva un suo ruolo importante grazie anche al boato del pubblico che già in precedenza aveva accolto con entusiasmo Blowin\' in the Wind. Non è certo l\'inclusione di Love Minus Zero/No Limit (uno dei tre brani inediti del secondo Dvd, con il quartetto ricordato in precedenza) a poterci consolare. Ovvio che salutiamo con favore invece la riproposta della conferenza stampa le testimonianze (il Leon Russel di oggi è tutto da vedere, i capelli e la barba ci sono sempre: bianchissimi), gli inserti con la lavorazione del film. Ma soprattutto il concerto non ha assolutamente perduto il suo fascino: come se la pellicola fosse il ritratto di Dorian Gray. Per quanto riguarda l\'edizione de luxe completano la confezione un bel libretto con foto del concerto, alcune cartoline con il logo The George Harrison fund for Unicef, la riproduzione delle parole di Bangladesh e del manifesto originale.
