Lì incontra un rude mandriano disposto a scortare le 1500 vacche della tenuta fino al porto, dove potranno venderle per salvare la proprietà. Il tragitto sarà lungo e porterà i due a diventare una \"famiglia\", non senza essere passati attraverso il bombardamento giapponese della città di Darwin...<br /> <br /> \"Australia\" è un colossal d’altri tempi, pieno di rimandi visivi e narrativi a film del passato. Si va infatti dal classico \"Via col vento\", fino al \"Moulin Rouge\" dello stesso Luhrmann, passando per il recente \"Pearl Harbor\". Il risultato è un film ambizioso, intenso e pregno di elementi positivi. Tra questi spicca certamente la fotografia ad opera di Mandy Walzer, che rende veri e propri quadri i paesaggi ripresi da Luhrmann. I colori accesi e i suggestivi campi lunghi, comunque, fanno solo da cornice a una trama articolata e avvincente, soprattutto per quanto riguarda la prima lunga parte, che potremmo definire in stile western.<br /> Poi, invero, si va un pò scemando, causa anche la stanchezza che fa capitolino nello spettatore. Il problema di \"Australia\" infatti è da rintracciarsi nella sceneggiatura: articolata, sì, ma poco lubrificata sul piano della continuità. Così, mentre la prima parte risulta coerente con gli iniziali presupposti narrativi, la seconda si dilunga troppo articolandosi in un modo che appare un pò forzato.<br /> <br /> Ottimi gli interpreti australiani Nicole Kidman e Hugh Jackman: entrambi vigorosi nel rappresentare il tema portante della pellicola, ovvero le \"generazioni perdute\". Così erano chiamate in Australia, infatti, le generazioni di mulatti che venivano allontanati, con forza, dalla propria terra e dalla propria famiglia. Un tema scottante che nel film di Luhnrman viene affrontato con lucidità e partecipazione.
