Diretto da Valerio Zurlini sulla scorta dell???omonimo romanzo autobiografico di Vasco Pratolini, si costruisce tutto sul rapporto fra due fratelli, cresciuti l???uno lontano dall???altro e ravvicinati poi dalla vita fino al giorno in cui il pi?? giovane dei due muore di malattia. Il rapporto, nel testo letterario, era stato espresso con immacolato nitore, in un clima dolcemente ma sobriamente elegiaco, pervaso da notazioni drammatiche intime e raccolte, distese e armoniose, rese anche pi?? intense da un procedimento narrativo che, anzich?? raccontare gli eventi al lettore, li ricordava al personaggio che li aveva subiti cui l???autore costantemente si rivolgeva in seconda persona. Zurlini, proiettando sullo schermo questo stesso rapporto, ha mantenuto, grazie allo speaker, il procedimento narrativo con cui era stato proposto ed ?? riuscito a farlo vibrare della stessa tesa e interiore emozione di cui lo aveva rivestito Pratolini ricercando un ritmo sapientemente lento e largamente cadenzato, dalle cui pause, dalle cui volute immobilit??, dalle cui ansiose sospensioni ha fatto poi nascere le atmosfere pi?? sommesse, gli stati d???animo pi?? dolorosi, i momenti psicologici pi?? chiusi e inespressi; affidandosi visivamente, quanto a scrittura e a colori, alla serena pittura di Rosai per ridarci le armoniche geometrie e le bene ordinate architetture di quegli sfondi fiorentini cui abitualmente l???azione si affida. Con il risultato di offrirci un film di severa bellezza che, oltre a tutto, tiene il pubblico dal principio alla fine con il cuore stretto e angosciato per la nobilt?? spesso dolente dei sentimenti raccomandati alla sua attenzione, condotti in talune pagine fino al diapason della pi?? lacerata ma sempre austera emozione (si veda, per un esempio, la sequenza del primo incontro fra la nonna e i due fratelli all???ospizio dei vecchi, linguisticamente e drammaticamente risolta in modo addirittura esemplare). Completa tanto equilibrio e tanto studio, un???interpretazione fra le pi?? solide e serie: Marcello Mastroianni, infatti, nelle vesti del protagonista, ci offre il meglio del suo talento e della sua concretissima sensibilit?? drammatica; Jacques Perrin, il fratello minore, rivela sfumature espressive decisamente superiori a quelle che pure tanto lo avevano fatto apprezzare nella Ragazza con la valigia, e Sylvie, nelle vesti della nonna, arriva a comporre un carattere cos?? dignitoso, cos?? vivo, cos?? umile come forse ancora non ci aveva dato nella sua lunga e meritoria carriera.
