Blues Guitarist Phil Guy, R.I.P.
Blues guitarist Phil Guy, the younger brother of Chicago blues legend Buddy Guy, passed away on Wednesday morning, August 20th, 2008 of complications from prostate cancer. Guy was diagnosed with the cancer back in January of this year, and he had to cancel several shows and festival appearances this summer due to the illness.
Although he had long toiled in the shadow of his better-known brother, Phil Guy forged a name for himself through the years, crafting a distinctive blues music hybrid that mixed blues, soul, rock, funk, and even hip-hop. Guy was born the fifth child, the third son, of Louisiana sharecroppers, and he began his career in the blues with he replaced his brother Buddy in Raful Neal's band when the older Guy moved to Chicago in the late-1950s. He would play with Neal well into the '60s while working various jobs around Baton Rouge.
Buddy asked his brother to join his band for a 1969 tour of Africa, and Phil moved to Chicago to pursue a career in music full-time. Guy toured with his brother throughout the next decade, and also performed and recorded with blues artists like Junior Wells, Koko Taylor, Son Seals, and John Lee Hooker.
Phil stepped into the spotlight on his own during the early-80s, recording his first album ΓÇô 1983's Bad Luck Boy ΓÇô for the British JSP Records label. Through the years, Guy has recorded better than a half dozen albums, including his most recent, 2006's He's My Blues Brother. For the past decade, Guy has performed with his band, The Chicago Machine, working to keep the flame of Chicago blues alive.
