Auf 4.000 Metern Höhe thront das Dorf Dankhar über dem Spiti-Tal im Himalaja. Hier, im kargen
indischen Grenzgebiet zu Tibet, lebt der Postbote und Bauer Dilip Kumar mit seiner Frau und
sechs Töchtern. Täglich muss er den steilen Weg in das zehn Kilometer entfernte Tal hinunter,
in dem das Postamt seinen Sitz hat. Die Region wird immer wieder von schweren Erdrutschen
heimgesucht. Außerdem ist das Dorf oft wochenlang vom Postverkehr abgeschnitten. In diesem Sommer
kommt es für Dulip Kumar noch schlimmer. Er fürchtet, nicht zum Dalai Lama gelangen zu können, der
in den kommenden Tagen ganz in der Nähe sein wird. Doch eine lokale Gottheit prophezeit ihnen gutes Wetter.
